Overhead cabinet modifications.

Something I strive to do as we use our Bambi is dream up ideas that will enhance its utility.
One of these ideas has taken shape this weekend and I have decided to share it here.

The overhead storage locker above the galley is way too open to safely store the dishes.
In spite of our efforts to find the perfect racks for storage, Things tend to end up all jumbled togeather.
The ensuing tantrum that I have while trying to find anything is a most unpleasent experience for my wife (so she claims).

Here is my solution!
I used some 3/8" cherry plywood covered with Formica and trimmed the edges with 1/8" Aluminium stock.
The entire shelf took about 2 hours to make and my out of pocket expenses were less than $25.00.

As a bonus I found some dead space behind the false bulkhead that I caped off and turned into a little spice rack.
Dorsey had the idea to use the aluminium for rails and it looks kind of cool.

The aluminum looks very cool--I'm a big fan. Fine job. Maybe Airtream should incorporate your innovation into future models!

Like what you did there, especially tucking into the wasted corners!

Ahh, so even after 80 or so years of Airstream storage design, improvements can still be made. Innovation, way to go!

These comments are all so flattering!
We like the changes, it will simplify our use of the cabinet certainly. The idea of using the "wasted space" behind the false bulkhead comes from our exposure to sailboats. No boat manufacturer worth their salt would ever let that space be covered up....
Thanks again for the nice comments.

I have nearly every overhead cabinet in my Classic28 double-decked. The only exception is the cabinet where I store my bulky overalls and foul-weather gear.

In the cabinet where we store our plates, the shelf is just high enough to clear the 4 plates and get our fingers in to pull them out. That left enough space on top for bowls.

We store our dessert plates in a home-made rack vertically at the end of the shelf. That way, they take little space and are on top of the big plates.
