Thanks Aage. I tried a scribe technique, but wasn't too successful. This modified paint stick is a great idea.

Pics

I promised some pics of the "mostly" finished dinette. Here it is with custom made cushions and throw pillows. Since these pics I have removed the temp floor and kick plates and started to lay down new Tarkett flooring. I'm hoping to have the floor and new kick plates in place within the next couple of days. More pics to come when jobs are completed.

regarding radiused corners, I have had great success using heavy drawing paper rather than cardboard. If it is not big enough, I tape multilple pieces together square. Then push the paper into the radius and trace it. I then use a flexible drawing tool available at any good art store to fine tune. You can even re tape paper on top of paper to get the template just right, then cut the wood once. This technique usually does the trick in one or max two cuts, nice and tight.

Timmy: The dinette is looking really great. Nice choice of fabric...it really feels like you're on holidays!

Mr. Decent: Good idea. Much easier to cut heavy paper than cardboard.

I'm using my spousal unit's (Campaz) computer today and found this thread in his favorites (no, not spying, just forgot it was not my favorites list). I love the wraparound sofa! He will wish I had found something more explosive in that list because I will not rest until we have that. Think you can have it done by July, dear?

Timmy, is it comfortable and does it work well not that you've had a chance to use it? Would you do anything different?

It should say, "now that you've had a chance to use it"

I have used thick brown "painter's paper" easily obtained from Home Depot. A sharp razor knife does the trick.

...great looking wraparound timmy!...

...looks like you just let the drapes hang down (no bottom track) right? I"m considering that as it allows you to 'lay back' against the wall without a bunch of track hitting you in the back... backtrackin' aint no fun!

...yes, the heavy paper is a good idea, its what I'm using for new cushions..

Just curious, are you planning to use one leg or two for your table.

I had to build a unit similar to these because my project has nothing in the space where the gaucho should have been.

new wrap around dinette

I have been a serial reader of this site for the last three years and finally registered today. Tore out my gaucho at the front of my 74 Tradewind and I will be building a dinette using your plan and a few others as inspiration. tore the flooring out last fall and have been adding aluminum accents to the interior. Found some rotten floor in the front corners that I will have to replace before I can paint build and install dinette and flooring. Found a leather futon that will fit in the rear sleeping area and will attempt to do the upholstery work in the front myself. I will post photos soon.

Its a one-leg system, looks better for small tables.

Hi, nubee here. Just starting on the renovation of a '78 (we think) Tradewind. Have you incorporated a dining table and extra bed conversion into this? I just love the concept of the wrap-around.

What was the depth of your seating? From the wall to the edge of the seats? And how tall is your dinette from the floor to the top? I'm about to start my dinette this weekend. I will be building mine like yours.

Responce

Thanks for all the nice words everyone. I need to apologize for being absent for so long. I will do my best to get questions answered and photos up early next week. Upcoming work this spring includes:
- trim work on the floor
- new counter top in kitchen
- new sink and hardware
- trim work in the bathroom
- and hopefully install a new cooktop and oven combination

Lots of other jobs as well but the above work is to be completed this spring.

Finally some pics

Here we go. I finally remembered to take some pics and scratch down some dimensions regarding the the new wrap around seating. The original plans I had sketched up wound up changing greatly as the job went on. I added in addional supports, re-configured the design around the battery box and convertor and made a separate shoe section under the bench close to the door.

As far as the dimensions go, we made the height of the bench 15 1/2", width of the side benches is 28 1/2" and width of the front bench is 27". Please note that this is the measurement of the plywood top. I set all the front frame work back about 1/2". The cushions used to sit on are all 4" foam. They are very comfy for both sitting on and sleeping on. A friend of ours did all the sewing of the cushions where as my wife did the curtains.

If you look at pic 008, my daughter is lying on her side of the dinette. We built a small folding table to go at the end of the bench which allows her to stretch right out. In the morning when we are packing up, the table folds up and gets put away until it's time to make the beds again. With all of the storage under the benches, we are able to pack away all the kids bedding, toys, beach toys and sports equipment.

Enjoy the pics and if anyone has more questions I will do my best to answer them. Take care.
