Need to replace goucho?? advise welcomed!

We were pulling our goucho out , in out newly acquired '72 Sovereign, to measure it for new foam when my husband leaned on the edge with his knee before supporting it and it all went crunch! Obviously we are newbies and were not paying attention. Is there some kind of support leg you are supposed to place underneath?

anyway, it is a mess of splintered plywood and plastic now.
We are thinking of pulling the whole thing out and putting in a pull out Ikea day bed. any thoughts on this?
Later down the road we may build in a proper pull out dinette/ bed thing. But we will wait until we have to replace the floor and do a full reno.
We are looking for a temp solution so we can enjoy our airstream for the next few summers.

Some folks replace with a couple small recliners.

We pulled the goucho out of ours and put in a futon but it is too low to comfortably sit at the table. I plan on refurbishing the goucho at some point. We may put in some sort of dinette eventually but I have not gotten that far. Did you break the housings for the tambor rollup doors below the goucho? The plywood can be replaced. The goucho gives you more storage options than a day bed or fouton.
