Want to install new laminate countertops on existing cabinets in our 1986 Sovereign. One installer tells us that the cabinets first have to be removed from the trailer because the countertops are mounted on the cabinets.

Does this make sense? Is it true?? Please advise.

I think you need to look for yourself to see how the countertops are mounted to the cabinets. It could be that the countertops are somehow mounted so that cabinet removal is required. Or, the countertop guy could be blowing smoke up your dress to justify his price.

Our new countertops are specifically mounted to the new cabinets so that they can just be unscrewed, and cabinet removal is not necessary.

Same here - my countertop and the old countertop sat on top and screwed into the cabinets- you should be able to mount on top and not have to pull the cabinets.

Sometimes on older cabinets the deck was screwed down first and then the laminate was glued down and trimmed. Even if this was the case, you peel up the old laminate and then remove the screws. I have never had to remove cabinets to remove a countertop.

This was a used corian countertop with an integral sink that I picked up from a Habitat Restore for 90 bucks about a year ago. It was quite large and I had to cut it down from its approx. 7' length to about 5 foot. I built a new base cabinet for it as well.

I'm in the process of renovating our 73 Argosy. It's not exactly modernized...more like new-retro.

Aqua Boomerang Formica (Sadly, they discontinued this one about 4 years ago)

You do not have to pull the cabinets. There are screws to the wall under the range and a handful of screws under the front edge of the counter. Also 3 on the backside under the oven.

We have a 70 31ft that we laminated directly over the top of the old green laminate. Done correctly, it lasted over 13 years. Last spring we used a mosaic tile over the top of that with awesome results, trimmed in aluminum angle.

When we first re laminated, we did pull the counter off the base cabinets to do the work in the garage, when we tiled we just left everything together and got after it. Sorry this is the best pic I have at the time.

this may be a dumb question but did you cut the space for the oven or did you have it done by someone else?

Let's play, looks amazing and so spacious. There are so many decorating choices, tough to choose. I have no counter space, so not much of an issue.
