Ikea Solid Wood Counter Top Install

Just finished a (very ugly) plastic laminate counter top replacement with solid wood birch chop block from Ikea.

So far so good. Oiled the wood three times for protection from rings and stains. Will need to do so every six months or so. The material is easy to work with and comes in a depth that covers the extra wide cabinet base in my '72 Overlander.

The wood is 1 1/2" thick giving the edge a nice solid surface look. We went ahead and replaced the cook top and sink as well for added countertop space.

Very cost effective solution - countertops were $350 all in as a DIY project. On to the bathroom! Oh boy!

They are heavier then the 3/4" plywood that came out, but much lighter then a solid surface or stone. Once the holes are cut out for the sink and cook top, I would estimate a net gain to be 40 to 50#.

Looks Great AND

Looks great AND looks like you got yourself a BIG increase in counter space. What brand is that two burner stove top? Ikea too?

The single sink has a few disadvantages over two sinks, however, most dual RV sinks are too small and too shallow to wash a platter or a big skillet. Having only one sink, you tend to dry and put away the dishes, with two, it's easy to put the drain pan in one and let the clean air dried dishes clutter up the look of the counter. Having only one drain pipe also enlarges the under the sink storage space.

Very clean look overall. Are you planning to redo the fold down part with the wood too?

HMMM, 40 - 50 lb isn't bad for a weight gain(in a countertop anyway! ). I'll bet it would work for a table top too. HMMM.

That looks great! would also like to know what stove top brand that is. I installed that same counter top in my daughter's kitchen. She loves it. Oil it regularly!

Very nice, Is the sink cut out big enough to replace the fold up.

I do have plans for the flip top refinish. Using the cut out for the sink is a great idea. Wish I had planned for that before drilling my cutting holes!

The cooktop is an Atwood Two burner from Vintage Trailer Supply. It is very basic, no pilot light or spark lighting, but works well for how we cook while camping. You do need to create a new line in hole for the LP connection to coordinate with a 1 1/2" thick top.
