If not tambour, what??
Hi all,
I have followed all the tambour threads with interest and have called many of the recommended tambour replacement places because....we have none.
All of our tambour is missing. Worse yet, the little roller tracks for the sides and the spring loaded shade roller is missing too. And those parts are the ones we can't find.
We can get 4x8 sheets but no hardware.
So, two questions:
- does anyone have a source for the hardware
OR
- have you done a replacement that looks great (using another type of doors like bypass) and if so, can you post a pic?
Thanks for any advice!

The only hardware you need is the handles and the guides that are on both sides of the tambour doors.
We have both.

Andy, I don't see those items in your parts list
I'm interested in the tambour handles.

the tambour tracks from a late 70's airstream/argosy won't likely work w/ an early 70's model; the later models cabinets had curved faces, and curved scrolls to match. the early 70's were flat.
Mike: Andy's parts listing on his web site is only a "sampling" of the stuff he has. its not an all-inclusive list.

Great to know Andy has the handles and tracks for the sides...
Isn't there also a pull-shade-type dowel that is spring loaded too? I don't know for sure of course, since I don't have the parts...but that is what they used for the restoration on DIY.
Thanks much.

Thanks for the offer. That was nice of you. But I already have the tambour tracks. I was looking for the handles to enable one to pull up and down on the tambour.

Resolved tambour woes
Well, we've gone another direction and replaced the missing tambour in our 1971 Safari with sliding lexan doors. Here's a quick peek, with more pics in our "So Close and Yet Safari" thread.
Thanks to everyone for the ideas and advice!

The lexan looks great. Very modern and probably trouble free. Where do you buy the lexan? Did you cut it yourself?

I need the tambour for the big stereo/tv cabinet in the late 70's Sovereign. ITs a long piece that curves around the whole cabinet. Mine was broken and replaced with a homemade cabinet door using the old tambour.
If anyone is getting rid of theirs pls let us know.

Glad you guys like it. We bought the acrylic (I guess it isn't actually lexan) sheets at Home Depot. My husband cut them to size on a table saw. He cut the holes with a one inch forstner bit on the drill press. Then he sanded them with an orbital sander.
Whew. Glad he's got all those tools

What did you use for tracks?
My wife has MS, and has trouble standing and raising the tambour doors at the same time. The sliding doors look like a perfect solution. What did you use for tracks for the doors to slide in?

Our 04 CCD had lexan panels just like that - so you are on the cutting edge! Ours were backlit with a color in the well, so it looked pretty cool..

Ayresdream- you can make wood tracks for lexan, or formica doors, that are fit into (and glued to) the extruded aluminum frame of your overheads. It is roughly a 3/4" by 3/4" wood strip, with saw kerfs spaced a little bit apart for the lexan or formica to slide in. Make the kerfs in the top strip deeper than the bottom ones, and then you'll be able to lift the panels into place and have them captured top and bottom. It's easy with a small table saw, and some construction adhesive. With formica, you can choose from hundreds (thousands?) of colors, patterns, textures, etc. Have fun! -tim

We used wood strips as the sliders...they have the grooves for the panels cut into them. They work really well.
