Formica ideas

Here's a link to some (new) old formica styles. They can be special ordered at the big box stores for the same price as standard styles and they can be ordered in 4x8,10,12 5x8,10,12 or 6x8,10,12 ft. I recently ordered a 5x8 sheet because it was the most efficient use of material. It took about a week to get here and cost about $1.80 sq.ft. Just take the style number and description with you if you decide to order some.

(hope the link works)

I love Boomerangs!

The "Aqua Boomerang" pattern was put in my Grandmother's new house in 1955! I have always loved that pattern! In one of her baths they had the same pattern in a bright sunny yellow. It would be a super-kewl choice for a 50's-vintage Airstream!

Wow, an eight page document that "weighs" over a gig?

Needs to go on a diet!

Mind you, it has a bunch of really nice styles...

Nice Formica styles. I am looking for the cracked ice pattern which Formica doesn't show.I have found it,but at small suppliers only available in 4x10
@ $475-$675 a sheet!!
If anyone out there is looking for this pattern in red and wants to split a sheet ,let me know.

Yes, sorry, I meant a meg. But I still say it's overweight. LOL!

Grin - and here I was thinking it was a pretty small file size for 8 pages of fairly good quality pictures. But then, I deal with lots of really, really big files every day.

Annette and I went to Home depot this Thursday and ordered a 4'X8' sheet of #6940-58/Skylark Boomerang. Total including tax was $56.10. That is enough to do our kitchen and bath counters in our Excella. Whoever the guy that ordered it for us talked to said they a a lot of Boomerang left but they would not replace if something happens down the road. Not sure what other colors are available. Should look pretty cool. We also found an oval stainless steel sink for the bath up on E-bay. I'll post pic's when we get it done. Found a guy who will put the Formica on for around $75.00. Yip-ee

It looks like they changed the destination on the link... I've read recently that they're discontinuing a lot of the older styles. We're re-doing a '73 Shasta and have started looking for formica ideas again, only to find them limited.

Got it installed

Here is the finished project with the Aqua Boomerang. We got a little carried away and replaced the faucet also. Cabinet dude had some old leftover aluminum trim so we put that on as well. And while we were on a roll, did the bathroom too. Found a new stainless steel sink. Now we need to get rid of that ugly wall paper in bath.
Cabinet guy was more than $75. by about 5X with the trim and back splashes. He made new counter tops from plywood so he could screw in the trim.

My formica job

I wanted to replace the original tops with formica ...something plain. I asked around and found rolls of formica abandoned in a lumber yard storage shop. I chose the red to fit the colors inside the Curtis already...(original was a white tile pattern.) 5$ for a 12 x 4 roll. A can of adhesive and a throw away brush.

Let me tell you, cutting formica without chipping is an ordeal. I found that going very slowly with a very fine tooth jig saw blade the best. GO SLOW.
Adhesive applied to both surfaces and let it dry completely. I used 1/2 dozen broom/mop handles laid across the plywood tops to align and keep separate the two pieces for the joining. You cannot even touch the pieces together for the alignment....they touch...they are done....stuck. I found that by cutting the formica a few inches larger than the top gave some lattitude to work with. Slid the handles out one at a time and had the good adhesion.

I used a router to now trim off the excess edges for final size.

A chipped formica edge is sharper than a scalpel.....I had it literally shave pieses off my hands as I worked with it and some chipped pieces.....be careful.

I went to a Formica distributor today and they contacted the main warehouse (in Indiana?). Formica has discontinued the boomerang and virrvarr patterns, but there is still some left in supply.
6940-58 Skylark Boomerang 5 sheets 4x8, 21-5x8
6941-58 Coral Boomerang I got there last 2 sheets
6959-58 Aqua Boomerang 43-4x8, 23 5x?
6943-58 Virrvarr white 58+ sheets left
There's still some out there.

We just remodeled our kitchen in our (non-mobile) home with the Aqua Boomerang Formica, we ordered 2 5 X 8 and 1 4 X 8 sheets from Lowes for less than $200...sadly it has been taken out of production and will only be available until their (Formica) stock is depleted...we are just lucky that we didn't wait another year to do the kitchen remod.

Pics??? I'd love to see what it looks like up close. It's hard to see the detail in AirHeadsRus' pics. I'm thinking about using this color for my '58.

You should be able to go to a countertop fabricator who uses P-lam (plastic laminate, Formica generic) and find some kind of groovy pattern, maybe even boomerang. There are a number of companies making p-lam and having something made shouldn't break the bank for a tiny Airstream kitchen.
Wilsonart, manufacturer of decorative surfacing materials and adhesives for countertops and work surfaces
Abet Inc.
Laminati USA
Nevamar HPL

and then there is this stuff, maybe not for countertops but beautiful and god-awful expensive, but the sell off cuts.
