Changing out dinette for a lounge

I am looking at a 23 ft AS with a dinette, i would like to change it out for an L shaped lounge and pull out table. Does anyone know who sells them? The price is right on the AS with a dinette, i'm wondering how much it would cost me? Thank you George

George,

It might help if you post the model Airstream that you're looking at.
But, for the most part, additions, or changes in existing interior features are custom jobs, not off the shelf items. Plan on spending some serious cash to get what you want in an acceptable quality, or break out your wood working tools.

Thanks for the reply. It is a 2006 23ft safari with a dinette. I figured that you could get the exact L shaped lounge from who ever airstream buys from? Thanks

It is a little different than that, there is another one with the smaller window in front. That one looks quite a bit more expensive. I did see a picture of it but i can't remember which dealer had it. So you couldn't buy dirrect from AS?

I am under the impression that they do not buy, but make it themselves in their furniture shop.

Here is some info that might be helpful because it is similar. I have a 2005 16' CCD with a front dinette, and would rather have a sofa. This was not an option on a 16', but it was an option on a 19', which is similar in the front.

I contacted the local Airstream dealer, and they looked up all the various parts for the 19' sofa, told me it could be made to fit, and gave me prices (about $2,000), not including the labor if I wanted them to do it. They talked with Airstream HQ in Ohio to get the info, so I am inclined to trust what they told me. A couple of issues:

- Choice of fabric or leather, and does it match the existing decor of the trailer
- What is located under the dinette, and would anthing need to be relocated ? (the 16' has the fresh water tank & electrical wiring under the street side bench seat, not clear whether things would have to be moved to accomodate the sofa)
- Floor covering - would any part of the plywood floor be visible, not covered by the existing floor covering?

All of these things likely have solutions - it becomes a question of how much you want to spend. Another thought would be to advertise that you'd like to change the dinette for a lounge - maybe you can find an owner who would prefer the dinette and make a swap...?

Please post back and let us know what you find out - and good luck!
Bob

Thank you Bob, you gave me quite a few things to think about. I have to do a little more reseach to see if it's worth doing. I'd like to get one before spring is over so i could get a little time camping before the summer. I live on an awesome lake and it will be hard to leave when it warms up. Thank you again George

You are correct in that all the interior components are built to order right in the JC plant. As AS orders are put into production each department starts making the components for each unit as it goes through assembly. I am not sure if AS would make one to order unless the unit was actually there.

You could give them a call to see what they would be willing to do. 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm, EST: 937-596-6111.

$2K + Labor?!

Wow, maybe I'm wasting my time making pizzas!

These things are not that difficult to make.

they're not difficult to make but as in any business there's profit, overhead, liability insurance, workers compensation insurance and a host of other bills and people trying to get money out of you. as a small business owner, liability insurance and workers comp insurance is expensive. i have to say that i don't think 2K is too bad for a custom piece that will fit your rig to a tee (if you're willing to have someone else make it that is).

pizzachop - thanks for the dinette details. i seemed to have missed those in all my searching on the subject. i may try and do something like that in my flying cloud if i can get it to fit.

Dinette

The repair shop will build custom for you.
They did a Safari FB while I was there. They removed the dinette and built a hinged table so the owner could put two recliners on either side of the table.
I replaced my dinette with two recliners, but I put the table in the corner instead of the middle.

Thank you Don, i did call the factory, they are going to give me a price. They said it will probably be somewhere around $2500. I'll see how i like the dinette but i love that lounge. Thanks again George
