Cabinet Makeover Question

I have a '75 Argosy 22' and I want to "resurface" the original floor cabinets with white formica. The problem is that I want the formica to slide under the lip of the door framing metal. So I either take the doors/cabinet faces apart or just find a place that has the metal and rebuild the fronts. Has anyone done this before?
