Bunk bed

Has anyone ever seen a bunk bed in the front area of a 21' over the dinette? If so does any one have any pics of this. I just purchased a 1973 21' with the bunk bed brackets mounted to the celing over the dinette and hole s where the hooks for the wall should be just wondering if this is a one time thing or an option for this model.........Thanks Jeff

Bunk bed

Greetings Jeff!

What you have is the hardware that is associated with what is generally referred to as a "Hammock Bunk". These were available in at least two sizes according to information that I have seen. My '64 Overlander has mounting hardware for two such bunks (one over each of the center twins) - - in fact I remember sleeping in one of these when the trailer was new in '64. These bunks were essentially an aluminum frame that folded with canvas streched between the main rails much like a wooden army cot. The original bunks for my trailer were separated from the coach sometime between the second and third owners as the third owner's from whom I purchased the coach had no knowledge of the bunks. There were some photos of such an arrangement in the airstreamphotos.com site as well as on an earlier thread for which I have misplaced the reference.

Bunk Bed

Greetings Jeff!

I have seen two of the smaller, single axle trailers from the late 1960s/early 1970s with the "Hammock Bunks" over the dinette or front lounge. While I didn't actually measure the bunks, they appear to be a bit wider than those that were mounted over the center twins in my Overlander. I don't know just when the "Hammock Bunks" were discontinued, but suspect that it was prior to 1980 as I don't remember seeing them in trailers much more recent than 1975/76.

You know, I think my trailer may have had a bunk installed at one time. I was noticing over the weekend that there are 2 spots on the ceiling, over the street side bed...6 pop rivets in a circle, about 3 inches in diameter. each of these is right up next to the partitions that form the "bedroom". I pulled back the curtain over the window, and also found another half dozen of pop-rivets in an "l l " pattern, half way up the wall...right about where you'd expect to find some hardware mounted for such a bunk. there's one of those on both ends of the space. I imagine that whover took it out (if that's what this evidence reveals) just filled in the holes w/ pop rivets to make it look finished. bummer....wish I still had the thing.

Bunk bed

Greetings Chuck!

What you describe sounds like the mounting patterns that would be left after removing the brackets for the ceiling and wall supports for the "Hammock Bunk". I believe that my hardware is attached with metal screws, but would need to check to be sure - - filling in the vacated spots with rivets would make sense as a means of concealing the mounting holes.

Well, what I would like to do is locate this hardware and re-install the bunk. If anyone has any clues as where to get it this would be great.
