1970s Closet Door Latches

Hi all,
Those familiar with this style of latch know that the back side of the latch assembly consists of two black plastic pieces with the top piece spring mounted to permit opening and closing of the closet.

My question is: how in hades do you put this blasted thing together? The trick is getting the spring back far enough to put the two pieces together. Any experts out there who could help me with this?

I've spent many annoying hours trying to get these latches back in place. I sure hope that thread helps you.
