Smile 1967 overlander Another rescue

We have added another silver child to our family. James went and picked up horse feed yesterday and decided to go the back roads home. He spotted an A/S setting in a field next to a old rusty stock trailer, no one was home so after I got home from work we went by to look at it. I went up to the house and ask if it was for sale. The gentleman said hun it is old and needs a lot of work. I ask if I could look at it. We waded through waist high dry weeds, the out side looks great, the back window was out and setting on the ground, the door to the bumper compartment was on the ground and a window on the street side up front was half broken. The door was locked but the inside was trashed. The owner didn't know someone had been in it and trashed the inside. The propane tanks had been stolen.
The last time it was tagged was 1992, so it has been setting for 17years. We are going to pick her up Saturday, luckily we are only about 10 miles from our house so we can go slow going home. No doubt it will need a total floor replacement and the cabinets will have to be recreated. We can use the old ones for patterns. The owners wife said everything worked in it when they parked it. Well I am sure all the field mice, snakes, wasp, bugs of all kinds have had fun the last 17 years. As we are still working on our 69 this baby will have to wait in line. The first thing will be to secure the windows and seals to prevent any further damage.

way to go! You are brave, but it will be worth it. I rescued an Ambassador from the woods on top of a mesa in SW Colorado, in about the same shape. But it was free. BEDFORDS is now fixing it up.

Good luck.

I took some outside photos, the inside was a little scary. My internet is dial up because I live out in the boones. As soon as I can transfer to a CD I can download from work. It is suppose to snow here Saturday, I hope James and our son can get it out of the field before the snow.

She made it home, they had difficulty getting her out of the stock gate. It was a tight turn and Lance hooked the gate post with the rear bumper. SOOOOO I guess we now have bumper damage, hope it didn't do too much to the frame. I won't get home till dark tonight so I won't get to check her out. We thought the propane tanks were stolen, but to James surprise the propane tanks were in the bathtub.

CJ,
I thought you and James might have sniffed too much aluma dust at the Texas Vintage Rally. I will admit, however, see'in what can be done to those older units allows you to see in this trailer what others may miss. Good luck on your "2nd" project. I thought the other one was getting pretty close to done.

Dennis, glad to hear from you. Yes our 69 is pretty close to being done. We still want to change the axles and were on borrowed time for the air conditioner. I see things I want done but James thinks it works just fine the way it is. HEE HEE

Got home last night and looked at the 67, the sky lite in the center of the trailer was gone so all these year it has been exposed. All of the wood cabinets are peeling, the couch and twin matresses cushions will need replaced. Looks like the water heater was replaced at one time as it has the white door. The outside compartments are locked so James is going to have to get keys made. There are mud dobber nest as big as coffee cups anywhere a wasp could get, mice and bird nest and add to the excitement snake skins on the floor. I wonder if they are sleeping between the walls???????? The windows have been screwed shut because they lost the latches and cranks, red neck way I guess. I will have picture next week. James and Lance pulled two giant trash bags full of stuff from the inside, I mean 55 gallon trash bags and there is still more to do.

Congrats on your second find! How on earth did I miss this thread when it was posted a couple days ago. I thought James was going to be happy that he was done working on the Sovereign. Maybe you can sell her to your sister and brother and law

From having a trailer previously with Corning windows, I would definitely check to make sure the windows are glass and not plastic. The weatherstripping will all need to be replaced as well. Tape some plastic over the old astradome until you have time to get a new one.

Bring lots of pics to the rally next week, and I will upload them for you via high speed wi-fi if you like.

Steve

We cleaned 3 (55 gal) trash bags of stuff out of her. I chiseled mud dobber everywhere I could reach. The front door was all moldy, I sprayed Tile X and it melted away. I think I can mix Clorox and water and get the same results. I was just so tickled that the mold is going to be easy to remove. Five of the windows have been replaced with plain plexiglas and the windows screwed down from the outside through the windows. $$$$$$$$ I set off two bug bombs before I started working inside as a result the floor was littered with red wasp and yellow jackets. I only seen one spider and it is now dead.

congrats

Congratulations, CJ, I think you have a real project on your hands. With all the work you have done on your Sovereign, you should feel comfortable doing just about anything, and will do it well.

With your '69 and now your '67 trailers, some day you will be a real polishing guru!! We hope to see them both all shiny. Best of luck.

Laird and Nancy
