Aluminum Tail Light Housing Corrosion
Hi fellow AS'rs,
We recently noticed that the aluminum housings around our tail lights have some corrosion in the finish. We've tried a couple of cleaners recommended for aluminum with no improvement. The local service center recommends soaking them in paint remover overnight to remove the clear coat, sanding them with high grit wet sandpaper, then applying new clear coating.
We're just curious if others with late model AS's have encountered this. Apparently it's somewhat common on trailers spending much of their time near the ocean, but that's not us. It's only spent a couple of weekends at the ocean and we always wash it when we return. Otherwise it's kept in a well sheltered area on the north side of our house.
We're perplexed .
Thanks in advance for your thoughts on the matter!
Shelly

Lucy's are pretty bad, too. So far, I am just living with it.
Please let us know what you do and how it turns out.

I've got it on my 06 Bambi and want to tackle it this summer. Keep us posted on your results, I think I'm going to go that route.

I have it on my '06 Safari and don't care. It's a very minor issue given the severity of the others I've encountered, leaks from rear bumper, rear window, AC and on and on.

Yes, my 08 has this ok both lights. I will eventually remove each housing, have them media blasted and then powdercoated.

We have it on our 2005 Safari. I also noticed some spider veins around the clearance lights when I was washing the trailer last week. Just squiggly little veins on the aluminum that wouldn't wash off. I'm certain something will remove them, but I don't know what. JC

Yep- we just noticed this on our 2010 int'l. Luckily, we're at Alumapalooza this week, so it shouldn't be difficult to find someone who knows something about this. I'll ask around and report back.

Shelly,
Yours are pretty bad for being only a year old. Have you tried the dealer for a possible warranty claim? I'd rather see Airstream be accountible for this than you to spend time redoing them on a new trailer. That shouldn't happen that fast. Pat

Just use the word corrosion in the search bar above, a lot here have experience with it.

AS'rs are the best!! I so appreciate all of the comments and information. You helped find some existing threads that I didn't see and even shared at least one other fix.
I agree that it is a relatively minor issue and I feel fortunate that it's not as bad as many of you have experienced. It hasn't affected any body panels. But if we can fix it, we will. I want her to live forever and as original as possible!
On the warranty comment, we discovered it about a month after the 1 year warranty had expired. I will contact the factory. It can't hurt, right?
THANK YOU!!

Shelly, I believe all 2010's have a 2 year warranty.

We noticed it on our 2011 just a few months after purchasing. Apparently it's not under warranty, as I requested as fix it. They suggested to use corrosionx t9 and were using wulbernize. Based on our research, you should apply these products asap Ne try to limit the corrosion. Hope it helps!
