What size breaker for 8 gauge wire?
Hello Everyone. I have installed a 400 Watt Xantrex Inverter in My 1984 310 Limited MH. Power is supplied to the inverter via a dedicated 8 gauge wire approximately 10 feet long. The manual for the inverter does not tell me the maximum DC amperage the inverter will draw but I want to install an inline fuse/breaker. My question is what is the maximum amperage should I select for the fuse/breaker?

Based on the wire size, I would use a 50a. Doesn't the inverter have a built in fuse or breaker?
Hard to believe it wouldn't say something in the manual.
The TS400 recommends a 80a fuse, but that would mean a larger 6 AWG supply wire.

Yes, the inverter has a breaker. I want to protect the circuit in case there is a break in the hot lead, or the hot terminal on the inverter is shorted.

Hello,
I have the same Xantrex inverter you are installing. My manual says a 50 amp circuit breaker is the recommended size. I got mine from Star marine, it's a Blue Sea BS1010-0 50 amp surface mount circuit breaker. Check em out.....

Xantrex recommends 80a fuses for true sine wave inverters and 50a fuses for modified sine wave inverters.
So I guess is depends on which inverter you have. Stick with 50amps unless you upsize the dc wire.

Interesting. I checked my manual and it doesn't give a rating for the DC supply line. My inverter is an XPower Inverter 400 by Xantrex which I purchased at Costco. It produces a modified sine wave, max power of 400W, with a surge capacity of 700W.

from the Xantrex RS 400 installation manual (downloaded pdf) "use an 80 amp class T FUSE or a 50 amp CIRCUIT BREAKER......."

Based on the output wattage I had guessed that 50 amp might be the correct size. The inverter you looked up is not the same model as mine. I can't find my model on the site - I did look before posting my original question. (Maybe it was a Costco special). The printed manual that came with the inverter didn't specify.
The inverter came with two input cords, one with a power point (cigarette lighter) connector to be used for loads under 120 watts, and a cord with two battery clips for heavier loads.
