What Prevents a Thief From Stealing Your Surge Protector?

I've never used a surge protector with our Airstream, but I'm afraid to keep pressing our luck, and I've begun shopping.

Just now I saw a Progressive Industries 50 amp unit on Amazon for $330.

I'm wondering if there is a way to secure it when I'm hooked up to shore power and using the protector, but I'm away from the trailer for the day?

I would hate to spend that much money on one, and then have it walk away when I'm not around the campsite.

Nothing will stop a thief. I sometimes put a bag over the utility pedistal to hide it.

And, really, there is very little theft going on in campgrounds.

A chain or bicycle lock.

If you leave for a day trip just put the surge protector inside the locked trailer, and make sure to turn off the city water hose bib. Stow the shore power cord too.

If this is the surge protector you are looking at, you can get a cable type lock that will feed through the hole in the metal tab. I have the 30 amp version and use a fairly heavy cable style bike lock. Wrap it around the power post so it's not easy to get off. But you have to realize if somebody really wants it, it will disappear.

If someone wants it bad enough they'll take. A bicycle cable usually is a good deterrent. Mine is a progressive 30 amp basic model, but if I had a $300 one I too would be concerned.

I looked at a couple of lockable boxes that can be used but they were just plastic and wouldn't be much of a deterrent. Haven't found anything yet that would be easy for me to use but hard for a thief to use. I am not remotely paranoid about thieves yet as I haven't been to a place were that was a concern but I don't want to be careless either.

You can also use the internally mounted version. But I agree with Maggie - there's just not a ton of that kind of crime in most campsites and as others have said - if a determined thief wants something, it's gone.

For whatever it's worth - I've been using my 30a version since 2013 - still have it [emoji3]

The trick is to make yours harder to steal than your neighbor's. It shouldn't take much. A lock, cable, something, will make the other ones more attractive.

The "black box" type has been discontinued, but cheaper than the new ones (Progressive Industries EMS-PT50X 50A). I currently have the old model 30, but will getting the new 50A for the AS.

If a pro wants it, it is gone no matter what you do. Locks are only partially effective against amateurs looking for an easy score.

1. As mentioned most RV parks are very safe. Good folks.
2. If you're boon docking, the metal ring around the cable is for a chain to lock it to something making theft more time consuming.
3. I put a garbage bag over mine, not so much for security, but to keep it dry. Punch a hole in the bag, tape it up to the cable and leave the bottom open.

I took a slightly different approach, hardwired on the inside by the breaker box.

Many RV power posts have a lid that comes down covers your power cord and can be locked with a padlock.

I use a cable gun lock to secure my surge protector.

At a state park last year I saw a Ranger cutting a lock off a power box. Right on each box was a sticker saying to not lock them. Later he was back at the giant 5th wheel having a discussion with the owner.

I've taken a simple approach and just got a padlock that is big enough to go around both cords of my shore power line and my surge protector. If someone wants it they will have to take both which will be more of a commotion. I leave it attached to my shore power line when in storage and never have to unlock it. As said above, make it more difficult than the next one.
