What is this strange light on the side of my trailer?

There is a strange 1/2 inch crystal ball looking light on the outside of my 75 argosy 24". It is above the battery compartment and has wiring going to though an outlet box on the inside. I always wondered what it was and never knew it was a light till tonight. It was only on for a little bit and I dont think I could get it on again if I tried, but heres what I did. I plugged the trailer into power from my shop. At first everything ran like normal (lights were brighter than just 12V) but then things went just a little dimmer (not 12V dimmer though) and that strange light came on. Somebody must know what that light is...... maybe a "short" indicator light? thanks, Mark

That light is a "reversed polarity" light and tells you that the outlet you're plugged in to has the neutral and hot lines reversed. It should have come on instantly. Check it again.

The light itself is dangerous. If you have two faults--first the reversed polarity and second a bad ground--you're shell will be hot (through the filament of the light) with respect to earth, but no breakers will blow. If you are standing on damp earth and touch the shell, you will get a shock. Many posts recommend removing the light.

It is a reverse polarity light. The hot and neutral leads are switched at the outlet or your power cable is messed up. The light being on is bad.

Purchase one of the cheap polarity checkers, take a marker and color it to match your interior and leave it plugged in all the time. I painted mine silver and is plugged into the outlet by my stove, I check it every time I hookup and it stays on 24/7.

I have one of those and an AC volt meter plugged in the outlet opposite the door. It's the first thing you see when you open the door.
