Upgraded - need advice...

Upgraded! 30 Amp to 50 Amp advice needed.


Hello AS Community. My better half and I are still newbies. Last year we purchased our first AS, 18 International 25FB. We loved it so much and realized what we wanted or needed, so we upgraded to a 19 Classic 33 this year. We learned a ton and made many rookie mistakes with our first AS, that is actually helping us now. One thing I would like your help on is going from the 50 amp, down to the home 110. I have tried the 110 adapter to 30 amp, and connecting that 30 adapter to the 50 into the AS, but it is tripping the 15 amp breaker at the house. All the power on the AS is off.


With our first AS, it worked fine going from the 110 with the adapter up to the 30 amp. I know adding a new 220 plug at the house is ideal, but our HOA only allows it parked 48 hours, so it is in storage when not in use.


Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We have a 2018 33 Classic and I've not had an issue running 110 shore power at our storage facility provided I minimize what I "turn on" in the unit.(lights, one fantastic fan, etc). A/C is definitely out. Alde hot water on electric combined with the refrigerator on electric vs. propane for both combined with use of the microwave could also trip the breaker. Our previous 2007 Classic would trip the breaker on shore power at home if I tried to run the A/C. Ended up installing a 30 amp outlet in the garage to use with that unit when we brought it home for short term use.

I bought a 50amp to 20 amp "pigtail" to use when only 15 amp service is available.

The 15 amp circuit RULES. That breaker is designed to pop when everything plugged into it asks for more than 15 amps at a time. That happens because the wiring won't safely carry more. Circuit breakers prevent fires and save people from electrocution.
You can have an electrician wire a new 50 amp circuit onto your home panel, and even wire it to an outside box like the ones you find in RV Parks. Meanwhile, conserve. Everything is working as it should.

If you truly have all the power off in your trailer the breaker in youe house should not be tripping. You should even be able to run lights and other low power draw items but not your AC. You are connecting a 50 amp rv plug to a 30 amp rv plug adapter to a 20 or 15 amp house hold plug adapter-- its all 110v. I've done this befor wthout any problems. If you truly have everything off in the trailer it sounds like a problem with one of your adapters or cords, a bad connection, or the breaker?

Thank you fran&frank. I unplugged my garage fridge and that solved my issue with breaker tripping. It in in another part of the garage and I didn't realize it was on the same circuit.

Owning an Airstream might be regarded as an educational experience. Gradually we all hone our analytical skills. Happy you solved the problem. I lived in a house built in 1917, and mapping the circuits was a necessary nightmare. Functioning knob and tube! Dryer and big window a/c wired through the same 220 circuit... with 12 gauge wire on the a/c and a 50 amp breaker added to keep it from popping with every use (turned the 12 gauge into the actual fuse!) Guess how fast we got a new panel box to have room for the 10 new circuits we needed.
