Thirty Amp cord for new Fifty Amp service

I now have a new Serenity with the 50 Amp service. I have several old connection cords for 30 Amp service and am wondering exactly how to convert one of these so it has the female end to connect to the 50 Amp receptacle on the trailer and will allow me to plug the 30 Amp male plug into my generator. Maybe someone can give me instructions on where to obtain a 50 Amp female plug and how to wire the 30 Amp cord. I suspect it is done by using only one side of the two hot wires of the 110v 50 Amp connection.

So, first i need the female plug, second the instructions how to wire it.

Thanks for any help.

I've never wired one, but I have a 30 to 50 amp cord, and use it most of the time that I do not need both air conditioners. It must be jumpered internally to make both inputs hot because I can run everything in the trailer, just not at the same time.

I would say just jumper both the hot terminals together, and wire the return and neutral just like a 30 amp, and it should work fine. Just don't ever run both A/C units at the same time, and don't run the microwave when the A/C compressor is running, or you will trip breakers.

You do know there are 30/50 adaptors sold for plugging your 50 amp trailer into 30 amp shorepower? http://www.amazon.com/Camco-55185-Po...mp+rv+adaptors
They do not lock on like your cord but they are a cheap solution to what you want to do. Maybe more surfing would find one that locks to the trailer.

She doesn't want an adapter, but a plug to rewire a 30 amp cord to 50 amp input to the trailer, and end up with a cord like this: http://www.amazon.com/Conntek-14435-...to+30+amp+cord

This may be what you need? http://www.amazon.com/Generac-6331-5...b_title_garden

why do a splice? i use my 30 to 50 dogbone with my 30a cord. i can use it with any 30a cord and it avoids a splice that will be more likey to have a poor connection over time.

Just remeber you will only be able to safely pull 30 Amps through that cord. If you pull more that that the cord will overheat and trip a breaker. You should be ok if you only use one AC unit. Just be carefull.

Thanks, I will be running a 4000w generator and be cautious about only one A/C. Actually, i would most likely run no A/C, as I do not like to do this on the generator. But, my morning espresso, from a machine, this is important….

Every size wire has a current limit, no matter what you do.

A 30 amp cable, is good for 3600 watts, and a 50 amp cable is good for 6000 watts. Absolutely NO comparison.

Also, your 4000 watt generator, should only be used for a maximum 30 amp or 3600 watt draw. It's perfect for the trailer 30 amp cable.

Important, New information

Having run the generator only marginally during the past year, I discovered that the A/C will not be powered by the 4000w generator as it is wired via a 30 Amp cord, which has only three wires. Instead, what happens is the output of the generator is only on one side of the 30 Amp four wire connection when wired to a three wire 30 Amp cord. So, only 15 Amps basically is available.

Thus, I completely rewired my 30 Amp cord, carrying the two hot sides, the common, and the ground as separate wires into the 50 Amp on the side of the trailer.

This is way more work than is advisable.....I had to completely disassemble the plug into the trailer, running four wires into it. While it is sold as a 30 to 50 Amp plug, what happens is the hot sides are combined in the trailer plug, thus, going to three wires.

I then added an AWG 10 Wire down the side of the original three wire cord, and when all was said and done, my Progressive Industries EMS-PT50C Electrical Management System showed no errors, about 122v from each side, and when hooked up and tested, the A/C units ran perfectly, one at a time of course.

When on "cool" and pulling the temp down inside the trailer, the A/C pulls about 17 Amps, thus the inability for a 15 Amp circuit to run it for over a minute or two.

When measured here is what I see when running from the generator, but please note, this is all at 30 Amps, plugged into a 4000w generator.

Note, while the ends are both 50 Amp, I have labeled this cord so as not to inadvertently plug into a 50 Amp circuit, instead for generator use only.
