I always use a surge protector, but after reading this thread I want the device that tells you what the voltage is, too. There may be a device that is a surge protector and displays the voltage, and I may have seen one on someone else's trailer at a campground, but I don't remember the name brand or model.

Note that the TRC voltage regulators (both 30 and 50 amp) have both handles and standoff legs that are attached to the steel box. Thus a small chain with lock can be used to secure the unit to a trailer tire, axle, or the frame and slow down the casual thief. The plastic lock box for the surge protector"s connection would take just a pair of pliers to break apart.

Surge Guard® Voltage Regulator - 120V, 30A and 120/240V, 50A | Technology Research Corporation

The serious thieves have the necessary tools and torches to cut chain or locks in a heart beat and off they go with the gear with virtually no noise.

Both of the TRC units use a lot of payload and the 50 amp model is close to my comfort lifting level at 42 pounds while the 30 amp is 21 pounds. They almost need their own carrying case as the cables make packing them a problem with wasted floor space. Both the 30 and 50 amp surge yards reside in the rear trailer storage compartment.

In 50 some years of extensive camping and travel throughout the country I've never had anything stolen at a campground. A guy did chase us down to return my wife's cell phone she walked away from at a park bench at Grand Canyon last year.

Now, don't one of you fellows find us and lift our power/surge protector just to ruin our record. It's out on the pedestal right now, unlocked as usual.

I have never had a car stolen either. However, I still don't leave them parked with the keys in them.

Don't tempt fate or thieves!!

It's kind of like fishing. Keep at it long enough and sooner or later you'll catch one.

Be patient, my son. All shall come to those who wait. Do not lose faith.

Perhaps you'll encounter your thief in the afterlife.

I am not so lucky. In 1989 I came back to my campsite to find it wiped out. They took my clothes, boat, toiletries, hygiene products- everything- I was living at the campground, so had all my earthly goods with me. The thieves stole photo albums containing pictures since I got my first camera at age 11. That was the most upsetting part. The thing is, it is not necessary to steal from me. If you ask me for it, I will give it to you. After all, our purpose in being here is to help those in need. That being said, I think sometimes it is an illness or either they won't ask due to embarrassment. Thankfully, that is the only time in 36 years of camping that I've had anything stolen.

In general, RV people don't steal from RV people, or they don't steal from me because what they have is better/newer/nicer than mine, anyway.

Hi, I had two sewer connections stolen from me; Actually some dummy left them in the drain when putting the sewer hoses back in my bumper storage compartment. Surprise, surprise, when I got to the next camp ground hundreds of miles away.

Yes, the point is campers don't usually steal from campers. Professional thieves can find easier venues to operate in.

And we use common sense, don't leave my wallet on the picnic table when going for a hike or leave the keys in the ignition when shopping Walmart.

But if you guys keep raising this fear level, we may have to start locking our door at night (old habit, my parents never had a key for the door on the house).

I had a similar experience on our last trip. I always use a brass 4 way hose splitter on the campground faucet connection. Each outlet has a valve and it makes hose use very adaptable. When I got to a new campground I realized I didn't have it. So I called the previous campground to see if I had left it on their spigot. They said it wasn't there. So obviously it had been stolen. When I got home, I found not only had it been stolen, but the stupid thief hid it in the compartment where I keep my sewer fittings. What a dumb crook.
