Surge Protector Protector......

HI Forum!

I am ready to purchase a surge protector and am interested in the Progressive SSP-50XL....however, I'm wondering how I'm going to secure this when in use.......it's not cheap so i don't want to have to replace it ! Does anyone have this model or similar and how are you keeping it secured ?

There is a metal tab on the male plug end with a hole in it. You can use a cable and padlock to secure it to the park pedestal. It won't stop a determined thief, but will slow them down.

I use a cable type bike lock. Before you go to the store, measure the opening in the metal tab. The first lock I bought was too big to fit through the metal tab.

Get something where the lock is as water proof as possible with rubber covers, etc. Last thing you want is to hook up your lock to keep your expensive EMS from being taken and then find when you are trying to leave that the lock is rusted shut...

I secure mine with a couple of heavy duty cable ties. Easy to cut with a pair of cutters but so are most cable lock devices. It will deter the casual thief.

I hook mine to the trailer's power cord while it's still rolled up in the rear compartment and then use a separate 30 amp rated extension cord to connect from shore power to the Progressive power monitor. That leaves it all locked up and out of sight.

Of course, this is only possible because my old Airstream has a power cable that is fixed to the circuit breaker panel and routed through a hole in the floor when in use. I just bring the extension cord up through that same opening.

last week when hooking up power I noticed one prong on my EMS-PT30X had some heat damage from our last camp site (didnt notice the damage when leaving). I used the progressive EMS-PT30X and it worked fine but am wondering if anyone has had this issue and be able to replace the plug on their EMS-PT30X and not have to buy a new unit. Even though it still seems to work fine I'm not sure I want to continue using it with the damage it has.

Burned plugs are common due to the rough treatment and poor maintenance the the campground pedestals get. The damage is likely limited to the insulation at this point. If the prong is loose you should replace it in my opinion. You can call Progressive tech support and see what they have to say. It's on their website.

Wipe dielectric grease on the plugs.

this is cheap insurance for sites beyond you control

If you have a 50 amp to 30 amp “dog bone” adapter, you might want to use that. I do whenever there is a 50 amp plug available as they don’t get used as often and often have far less wear (slop).
