Surge Protector bleed over
When I have my 50 amp surge protector hook up to 30 amp Service I have between 1 to 4 amps showing on dead leg. Is this bleed over , normal , ok ?

Ok let me ask this another way. For anyone with 50 amp surge protector, when you are hooked up to a 30 amp service does your surge protector show amperage draw on just one leg or both? Mine shows the correct draw for what is running but also shows a draw of between 1 to 4 amps off the other leg that from my understanding should be reading 0. I have tried 2 different surge protectors with basic same results. Do I have a issue with TT or is this normal? Thanks for any feedback.

I really have no solid clue, only an idea.
Setup up as you state. Load showing on dead leg.
Now turn off 1 circuit breaker at a time and check dead leg load. Repeat for all breakers.
Second swag. Can you run same test on any other trailer looking for bleed over as you describe?
Never said I was a sparky remember that.
First time this has ever happened?

Thanks GCinSC2
I will try your test suggestion when I get back to streamer and plan to look around for other 50 setups when we’re camping next weekend. As far as before I have seen like one amp before but thought maybe just picking up bleed over. But maybe it went higher and I just never noticed.

Hi
The 30A to 50A adapter feeds *both* sides of the 50A circuit. If it did not, only half of the stuff in your trailer would work. There is no "dead leg" in this situation.

I’m disappointed I didn’t see this correctly and it must be a common but maybe Unobserved status. My rig is a 30A so never had this situation.
Using a VOM coulda been pretty easy to figure out continuity that the 30A hot was feeding both 50A legs.

Since electricity follows the path of least resistance, I would say you are powering your TT with some power from both 50 amp legs.

Hi
The whole "50A" power feed is not well presented and thus is poorly understood. Why it's not presented well, I have no idea at all. It's just a very normal 230V center tapped circuit. There is noting strange about it. Apparently people panic at the idea of 230V in the US. (In Europe, everything is 230V). It's far less frightening to talk about "two 120V legs 180 degrees out of phase.... err ... that's 230V ...
Since the 50A circuit is poorly presented, the 30A to 50A conversion is not as intuitive as it should be. The implication of "one 50A 120V wire" gets a lot of people mixed up.
Much easier if it was called a 100A hookup (which it is at 120V) or 50A/230V.
It's a crazy world !!!
Bob
