Still Seeking S/T/T Light Can

Still seeking replacement 4" STOP/TURN/TAIL lamp cans for my '72 Overlander. Original insert black steel can has rusted out and can't find any major provided that makes one sized to fit the A/S original aluminum assembly - very tight fit. The present ones are only an inch deep with a bulb socket at the base, and a surrounding ring that accepts a screw-on red or clear original lens (Grote or Truck-lite OEM). Any ideas??

Inland-Andy has them on his website...or had them. I'm pretty sure I saw him comment in a similar thread a while back that they don't make them anymore.

odd, though, that you can get the lenses. just not the cans....

there were some that popped up on e-bay a few weeks ago. the whole taillight assemblies. they wound up going for more than I wanted to pay. (I only need 1, for a backup light...which means I really don't "neeeeeed" it at all. would be nice to have.).

4 inch tail light

We are still trying to find a replacement tail light and back up light for the ealy 70's trailers.

LED's would be the real answer, but they are all to large.

They say they are 4 inch when in fact they are 4 1/4 inches.

The original metal cans are 4 1/8 inch.

If you cut the 4 1/4 inch body down, you destroy the light.

Back to the hunt, we go.

Can-do

Thanks Andy. I'm seriously thinking about finding a 4 1/8 inch stamped can and using/making an off-set adapter/extender ring to accomodate the extra 1/8 of the LED lamp. I've tested this increased diameter and offset with a 4 1/4 lens, and it does just work. If the lamp housing is extended about 2" out from the original lens point the aluminum housing is wide enough at that point. The offset is not apparent from 20' back and I could live with it.

Since I also need to repair the Backup lamp cans, another option is to do the above and install incandescent sockets for both the S/T/T and the Backup lamp. I also want to install a third brake lamp (LED) either in the rear window, or just above it. I'll be happy to share my outcome with you and Corky.

Air Conditioner.

We are also trying to find a can thats 4 1/8 inch, but so far, no luck.

Just today, we recived a cheap LED tail light, that needs to be cut down.

We will try that and see what happens.

We also are toying with the idea of making a fiberglass can, installing a socket and using the present lenses.

All under Corky's supervision, of course.

Andy

Light Socket

I have a tail light socket that needs to be replaced. Can you can replace the socket or do you have to replace the whole thing? If you can just replace the socket, what is the best way to do it?

Thanks!

Kathy,
Have you tried Colaw's RV Salvage in Missouri or Arizona RV Salvage? There are also a good number of them elsewhere. I have a link for a site that has a ton of RV salvage yards, I just have to dig them up.

Tail Light Replacement

I have heard from Andy at Inland RV and the whole thing has to be replaced. My question now is, how do you get the light compartment out and put the new one in?

Kathy.

Removal is easy.

Take the red or clear lens off.

On the back side of the can, you should see 2 pop rivets.

Drill them out, and carefully pull the can forward, towards you.

Mark the color of the wires, and then disconnect them.

That's it. Done.

The replacement LED tail lights are mounted with double sided tape.

After they are mounted, you can put a small bead of Parbond around the circular edge.
