Thanks for posting that. I had planned to remount the battery down to that location on our 59. the current battry box is mounted to the front below the window and in bad shape. It also hangs over the tanks and is limiting us to 20lb units. I had not thought of putting 2 batteries there but it appears to fit quite well. Do you have some measuements of that box so I can see if there is one of simular size available.
Looks like I have a new project!

Sure! Here is what I have found:

Front to back(length) is 14"
Left to right (width) is 17"
Top to bottom (depth) 10 1/4"

I'll have to see if I run accross a box close to that size. I was going to just put the battery in a boat battery box but that looks so much better. Looks like there may be enough room to set a EU2000 honda on top as well for travel. Don't like the idea of putting the generator in the tow rig or in the camper with the gas and stuff.

Sure thing. Check with the factory to see if they can sell you the box or at least give you the name of the manufac. There are no names or any markings on the box--I checked.

Ruebel, the batts that are in the box now are group 24s. If you have measurements of the 27s, you can get a rough est based on the numbers above.

I went and eyeballed the tounge...I'm going to be lucky to get one battery in between the frame rails little lone two. I really want to get two on there. looking at your pictures it appears that the tounge is longer on the newer units and spaced farther appart at the front wall as a result.
Back to the drawing board!

59, if your AS has a front couch or gaucho, is it possible to move/mount batteries under it? My 72 has plenty of room, but would need larger wiring, as the current battery is wayyyyy in the right rear corner, with the Univolt. I have also thought of mounting one in the credenza, and venting it behind the fridge, but worry about sparks, as the fridge is a 120 V only model. I suppose I could get a longer length of vent hose and run it up to the top fridge vent.

The older units like ours has the Air over water pressure system. The water tank is mounted under the goucho as is the Grover air pump. The side opposite of the grover pump is the lines coming out of the tank. Only place I could move it to is the rear storage compartment under the bed.

This unit is set up simular to a bambi in that the bed is all the way at the back and the bath is becide it. Trying to watch the weght that ends up behind the axle. I'm also concerned about the battery venting. That's a closed space that also houses the water heater and the Univolt and it will have a inverter as well. Possibly an A/C unit.

Looks like I'm stuck with just a single battery on the front.

Well, I like the two batt option, but I don't have that as an option in my car. In that case, I got the biggest most powerful I could get my hands on.

Maybe you can't fit two, but maybe one "Tim Allen" type of deep cycle batt could be better than a basic single unit.

Just a thought....

Not as good as 2 batteries, but:

We had only one battery in our 1974, and when we changed the refrigerator, this paused a problem, as the control panel on these "new" models was something unexpected. This is the place where you do not want to run out of juice. So, our fridge now has it's own battery.
To avoid wiring it in the system, we've put it at the bottom of the pantry, and use a Sears battery minder. We have been using that for over 2 years.
There is close to one inch venting at the bottom of the doors, and we make a point to leave the door ajar when we are on shore power.

Maybe a similar set-up can help you.
