Greetings:

A basic primer I acquired for my boat electrical system is The 12 Volt Bible. (Miner K. Brotherton) For a much broader, but less detailed, primer focused on RV's, I thought the write-up and diagrams at "http://www.marxrv.com/12volt/12volt.htm" were extremely helpful. I thought it gave a very clear overview for a number of basic questions that we all have when we get started.

Fair winds.

Steve

Time out, folks, we're providing information in all sorts of directions the OP doesn't need (yet).

The original question was about charging the batteries from the Honda generators directly from their DC output. It's only 8 amps (about 100 watts) and not enough to help much.

The 120 volts AC from the generator (one is enough, unless you're running air conditioning) is the same as 120 volts AC from a hookup or your house, and a charger, converter or Univolt changes this 120 volts AC to DC to charge the batteries.

In most cases you do not need or want an inverter (which changes 12 volts from the batteries to 120 volts for appliances) because your appliances operate from 12 volts anyway. If you want to run 120 volt AC appliances from the batteries, they had better be large batteries and it's another whole discussion.
