power failure

1985 345 motorhome, we plugged into shore power, and 20 minutes later turned on the icemaker which we replaced 2 trips ago, and lost shore power. We checked all the breakers, and could run the generator and power the microwave, etc.
Someone suggested a GFI could cause the problem, but we don't have any GFIs that we know of any ideas?

Have you checked the breaker from shore power to the plug where you are plugged in?
You may have overloaded the circuit.

Time for a Volt Meter and a Wiring Diagram

The Genny runs through the same circuit breakers on the main panel as the shore power...I would suspect either a bad contactor in the shore power recoil can or the positive contactor in the bedroom that connects/disconnects the shore power/generator electrical sources to the main panel.

If it were me, I would get a copy of the wiring diagram and start tracing the shore power voltage from the shore power connector back to the panel.

From your description there has to be an open circuit somewhere.

Luck - let us know how it goes.

wiring diagram

the diagram we have in the owners manual is very incomplete. I am very ignorant about wiring but the fact that the generator could power everything makes it sound more like the shore power contact We will advise when we get it figured out. The trip actually turned out ok cos we put hooked up our small battery charger to the coach batteries and were able to run everything, used an extension cord from their box to power the TV and watch the golf. Our inverter has a toggle switch with off in the middle, surge in the down postion and I don't remember what it says in the up postion. What is the surge postion for?
