Hi, Binder,

If the cabinet and ground leg of the radio are good, the next guess is that you're getting some unfiltered AC "ripple" in power in. Listen to a flourescent light in a quiet room - that's a 60 cycle hum. If what you hear as static is really AC leakage onto the filtered circuit, it'll sound like it's at the same frequency. Come to think of it, most original Univolts are a BIG 60 cycle hum, and you don't need a quiet room to hear them.

Mine sounds like it's about to levitate, but it's still putting out 13.7 volts, and I try to keep on top of the batteries' water. Replacing it's on the todo list, but it's down a ways.

Lamar

big difference between the original 70's radio and a modern solid-state one.

I had no problem with the old radio that was in the trailer. it wasn't "original", but it wasn't much newer than that. analog tuner, etc....

Hi, Chuck,

The "Motorola Entertainment Center" used in the 70's WIS an all-transistor device. All of that with nary a single chip, but we can still call them solid state.

yeah, I knew that probably wasn't the right terminology. but there's somethin in those microchips that makes them very sensitive. I would guess its a protective mechanism. I know on pc motherboards, if the voltage on any of those leads on the 20-pin power plug are off by as little as a few milivolts, the power is cut off to the whole system.
