no 12v power

i tried to start my refrigerator and it would not start because my battery was dead. i have a 1999 27' safari, it seems to me my fridge won't work unless i have 12v power, i don't understand this, i thought that's what the converter was for???

I don't think the converter will operate unless there is a minimal voltage in the batteries. If the batteries are dead (less than 11 volts), that's probably the reason.
