Question nine pin connector

My (new) 1985, 25' Soverign has a nine pin connector. The seller provided me with the female fitting. Should I wire the nine pin female to my 2001 Excursion? If so, what does the thin grey wire (reefer) connect to? Dosen't the reefer operate (or LPG pilot) function off the main battery wire?

Or maybe I should cut the nine pin off the AS & wire a new seven pin to fit the Ford.

Thanks,

nine pin connector

Greetings Driftwood!

Welcome to the Forums!

The nine-pin plug was an attempt to address a safety issue related to traveling with the refrigerator operating on propane and was used from 1985-88. My understanding is that its purpose was to insure that the gas flame in the refrigerator was extinguished when the tow vheicle's inginition was turned off (such as during a refueling stop) - - and a circuit was built in that did not permit the flame to be relit for 25-minutes after it was extinguished.

The wiring diagram for this plug can be found at:

Airstream Nine-Pin Bargman Plug Wiring Diagram

While I am sure that many would just switch to the current 7-pole plug, if the rig were mine, I would keep the safety device in-tact - - but I am also one of the few who still has working seatbelt interlocks on my '75 Cadillac Eldorado!

Good luck with your trailer!

Kevin

nine pin connector

Thank you for the reply.

I just finished installing the nine pin female on the right side of the Excursion hitch. Looks factory original!

I was provided with advice to cut the male & replace it with a seven pin, although, since the nine was original equipment, I had to retain it.

This '85 25' Soverign was a one owner & his third AS. Also his favorite. Everything (& I mean everything!, water pump, etc., etc.) is original - and all in working condition.

I beleive that I have everything under control at this time.

The one thing I could use is two overhead vent lids. The originals have no hinge and the plastic inserts are wasted.

Thanks again for the assistance & I appreciate the welcome to the Forum. I hope to learn how to navigate within it soon!
