New Pigtail locks up my Sovereign brakes

Recently bought a new pigtail from Out Of Doors Mart but it appears that a couple pins are cross wired. When its plugged in to my Ford Excursion it locks up my trailer brakes as soon as I plug it in and my reverse lights don't work either. My old pigtail didn't have these problems. It appears that the reverse lights and brakes are crossed wired in my new pigtail. Anybody else ever have this problem?

mike, your trailer might have the Airstream pre-standardized wiring configuration. maybe someone can verify that.

I had it

I had the problem when I plugged into my ex 2004 Ford Powerstroke truck. It was the center wire in the 7 way. I had to have the local trailer (horse trailer) folks use their tester to find the problem. Takes less than 5 minutes for everything....they charged nothing......Texas hospitality.

Here is diagram of the way the trailer was wired in 72. It's probably not the problem but it just might help. Good luck!

Sounds like the battery charge wire is in the place of the brake wire. This hsould be very easy to diagnose and repair.

Okay, I pulled my new pigtail apart today and found out that four wires (black, blue, yellow and red) were miswired (used the Airstream wiring diagram in my tech manual and my old pigtail as references). I told Out of Door Mart that my Airstream was a 1972, yet I still had to correct the wiring in my new pigtail. Geez!!! I expect more for 39 bucks.

Mike,

Did you purchase the pigtail with the blade connector on one end and the round connector on the other end, or the one with the blade connector (new style) or the one with the round connector (old style)?

Bill

I bought a 7-pin pigtail with the blade connectors on the TV side and the old style round connectors on the trailer side.

Mike,

Thanks, which end was wrong, the blade or the round?

Both. I fixed the trailer side first assuming that was where the problem was, but found all four wires on both sides were wrong.

Mike,

Did the wire colors match the plug colors on both sides, black to black, blue to blue, yellow to yellow and red to red? Has your trailer been changed to the current color code? I assume that your truck is the new color code.

Bill,
Yes, right now the wire colors match, pin-wise, on both sides, blue to blue, yellow to yellow, etc... but this is still a work in progress. I found a chart on this forum that has the blue, black and yellow wires switched out on the vehicle side. I still don't have reverse lights and I need to check my brakes still (brake lights work fine).

Anybody have any tips for the TV side wiring?

Wanted everyone to know that Dan at Out of Doors Mart has been very helpful in getting the correct wiring. Everything appears to now be correct. Dan also stated that they are implementing new QA procedures to check each pigtail before shipment.
