Hot Shell Condition

I have what I believe to be a "hot shell" condition on my 27' 1977 Overlander.

While working on the steps today, I was sitting on the ground outside the trailer. I reached into the trailer to grab a tool and when I touched the door frame got a shock. The trailer is plugged into an extension cord and not really using any 120 V appliances.

The multimeter shows 50 VAC between the door frame (and any other point on the outer shell) and earth.

I checked the breaker box and was unable to locate any loose connectors or wires. I checked the shore plug for any loose connections and it was good.

Even with all breakers off, I still get 15 VAC from shell to ground.

I checked the outside outlets and did not really see anything, but the box under the cover is riveted on. No shorts between receptacle connectors and ground.

I tried unplugging the univolt, but it did not make any difference.

I am thinking I may have a neutral wire somewhere with some damaged insulation.

Here is the strange part. I checked the leaking voltage with different breaker box conditions and got different readings.

All breakers off: 15 VAC
Main only on: 15 VAC
Main and "lighting" breaker on: 42.5 VAC
Main and top left: 23 VAC
Main and top right: 16.3 VAC
Main and top two: 24 VAC
All breakers on: 50.5 VAC

Any suggestions?

Glad you are OK! Some experts will chime in, but in the meantime here are some "hot shell" search results, showing other mentions throughout the AF site -- FYI:

Good luck,

Peter

Good News/Bad News

Well, thanks for the reply.

I decided to go to Harbor Freight and get a $6 polarity tester.

Turns out several outlets in my garage have an open ground.
Plugged my extension cord into a known good outlet and no voltage issues.

Lesson learned. Never assume your source is good!

Now, off to fix the garage outlets!
