High voltage on Progressive EMS

Hi all,

I have the Progressive EMS PT-50 for protecting my trailer’s circuitry.

Problem is, when I plug in at home and my sister’s house, L1 always reads a high voltage on L1 (as high as 220V) even though L2 reads normally (around 120V as expected). I have tested my mains and the multimeter reads 120 too so I am convinced the voltage on L2 is correct.

The power gets to the Progressive via a garage 15 amp circuit through two dog bones: 15 to 30a and 30 to 50a. I have tried two completely different sets of dog bones with the same result.

When I bypass the surge protector, everything electrical seems fine in the trailer.

Can anyone comment? When I hook directly into campsite 50a power everything reads normally. Is my problem with he surge protector, the dogbones, or something else?

Many thanks for any help!

Phil

To make matters more interesting, I now have plugged my electrical outlet tester into the RV and I find that it is reading open neutral. Does this help diagnose the problem?

Actually, I tried another tester and it states open ground. I have thrown out the other one as apparently one LED is not functioning.

How about some pictures of your setup with all the dog bones. That would help.

So for the record when I tried to do what you are doing my 50Amp Progressive device would not pass current because there was a ground fault detected. So when using 15A or 20A service I don't use the Progressive device.

Sorry but my trailer is in storage now so I don’t have photos, but it was 15-30-50 with two dogbones.

Given your comment about the ground fault, perhaps I am better off just manually checking “foreign” 15a outlets using my multimeter to ensure safety and then just using the Progressive for 30a and 50a services.
