An article in this months BLUE BERET suggests at adding a hard start capacitor to your A/C units.
Does anyone have experience with this upgrade and is it beneficial?thanks
I installed a hard start cap kit in both my Penguin I ac units a very long time ago. The best I can say is that it allows for much smoother and stronger compressor start. There is a noticeable change in the sound of the compressor start.
I specified my own cap and resistor ratings.
ill check my notes on another computer and post back tomorrow.
All the parts are available at an appliance repair shop. I think I found mine at Digikey. I think total.cost for the 2 units.was less than $20.
I can put together the retrofit instructions and post here. Anyone can do this. The hardest part is finding your ladder and removing the shroud!
I followed the directions in the BB article right up to installing the piggy back cables on the boost capacitor. My start capacitor has 3 wires, red, white and black. I am at an absolute loss on how to proceed. I purchased the Supco capacitor but it only has 2 black wires. This is for a Dometic Penguin AC. Any similar experience?
