generator electrical problems

I have used a champion generator for 4 years when I boondock. I have put some hours on this generator but always changed the plug and oil. The engine runs great. The Problem is the engine purrs like a kitten unitl I hook the voltage regulator back up. The generator starts to kick and buck and shut itself off. I went and bought a new voltage regulator and it stills dose the same thing. Engine runs very smooth until I kick in the Voltage regular and it shakes grinds bucks then shuts itself down. Anybody have any ideas?

This is a long shot..... Check fuel filter and add seafoam. Don't forget to cross your fingers!
