Garmin Backup Camera with RV 760LMT
I've recently purchased the Garmin RV760LMT with the BC20 010-1168-02/010-01168-10 wireless back up camera.
My Airstream is the 2013 Intl. 19'.
Has anyone install one of these cameras?
If so, I'll like to hear about how you did it and lessons learned.
Thanks,
Jack

Yes, works fine for me. I bought the extension cable, ran the cable under the trailer and put the transmitter on the tongue. I tow with a full size pickup and the reception was not reliable with the transmitter on the trailer rear bumper. I powered it with a quick disconnect and fuse in the battery box.

Want to be sure, you are getting power from the batteries on the trailer tongue?
I was thinking of trying to tie it into the back up lights on the trailer so it would automatically come on when I put the rig into reverse.
How to you activate the camera - manually on the GPS?
Where on the rear of the trailer did you mount the camera?

I went a slightly different route by installing a home surveillance system with a DVR. It's a 4 camera setup so I have left, right, rear and forward. Forward is kind of useless, but it's a dashcam, more or less. I've completely gutted my AS so wiring was no issue. The DVR, cameras, and the router it is connected to all run on 12v so I just tapped into the AS 12v using pigtails.
So far so good. There is a slight, half-secondish delay but 4 cams do give a complete 360 awareness that the setup adds to safety. I get the feed by using the supplied app to connect to the router that is hooked up to the DVR. I was concerned about the wifi signal getting through the metal skin, but it's been fine so far.

That's COOL! Technology is so much fun!
I'm just wanting to be able to back up and not destroy anything in the process.
Thus, I'm thinking the Garmin camera will be all I need, just trying to hook it up as intelligently as possible.

If you wire it up to the reverse lights then it will only work when you are in reverse. I would want the camera to be available at any time I was towing so I could determine what traffic is doing behind me. 😀
Been looking into the Garmin option too so I am very interested in this discussion.

I just finished a 9 day venture and found the RV 760 to do a great job. I love the larger screen as then detail is excellent. Would purchase again.

Yes, the reason I hooked it up to the trailer battery is so that I can use it any time to see traffic behind me. I probably do that more than backing up. To look at the camera, you touch the camera icon in the upper right corner of the 760 display. You will only see that after you pair your camera with the 760. The camera comes with a different piece for attaching the 760 to 12v.

Thanks Larry - makes perfect sense using it more to check out what is behind on the highway.
Pondering best place on the back of the Airstream to place the camera. At the license plate frame we have power and then at the top center with a running light.
Curious, where did you locate it AND is that where you would locate it again?

It comes with a license plate mount and that works just fine. If you use any of the power taps you suggest, you will need to turn on your lights for the camera to work. That may be fine for you, but be sure that you get a good signal from the camera transmitter to the 760, from the back of the trailer if you do that. My trailer and truck are longer than yours and I did not get a good signal from back there.

IF possible, can you shoot a photo of the quick disconnect/fuse configuration?
My battery compartment is REALLY packed since I upgraded the two Interstate batteries to the LifeLine. That was definitely a good move but took up almost all of the battery box area.
I'd like to see how you set it up if possible.

Sorry, it is not convenient. If you have room for a fuse in-line holder, you have room. I soldered a ring connector on a wire to attach to the battery, then a waterproof spade quick disconnect(from West Marine) on the other end of the wire. The other end of spade connector goes to the in-line fuse holder provided by Garmin. I just connect the spade connector before driving and disconnect it when done. It just sits off to the side, on top of a battery. Oh my batteries are Group 24 Lifelines and there was ample room.

I went a different route for my RV 760LMT camera installation; inside the trailer.
Used a simple L shaped metal corner bracket. Mounted the camera to the bracket and the bracket to the trailer with one of the screws holding the bug screen. So it is between the bug screen and the rear window.
Get some headlight glare off the back window when driving at night. Also need to keep the back window curtain closed to block any reflection from inside the trailer.
Purchased extension cord to run the transmitter up front inside the trailer. Installed a male cigarette lighter onto the Garmin cord so I can plug it into a 12V receptacle in the trailer for power.
View is distorted, since the camera uses an extremely wide angle lens. So, I don't use it as my exclusive backup guide but in conjunction with my wife who directs me with walkie talkie.
Mostly used to see what is behind me when driving. The original operating system allowed you to switch to the camera view from the map view but they eliminated that feature and you can only get to the camera view via the home screen, requiring two taps if you are in map view. No hands free voice command option to get to the camera view, either.

I got the Garmin rear view camera last spring and a new Garmin GPS to view it on on the TV. Wireless works well. I have a 27' FB so I put the camera in the top of the rear window. This puts it inside out of the weather. I ran a wire to the cigarette lighter under the table and put in a switch to turn it on and off. Not as convenient as having it wired to the backup light maybe but this way you can have it on all the time while driving if desired. I ran the camera wire through the slot for window handles so no new holes.

Hello Tao
I have 2008 19' Safari SE. I clipped the camera with its clip onto the rear licence plate and ran the cables through the rear accessory hatch. If you look carefully, the bed mattress sits on a plywood board and the rear corner is accessible through the hatch where there was a small space that I was able to thread the cables through and then under the mattress. I ran the cables (with a 12 V pigtail extension) into the 12 V cigarette lighter adapter port on the inverter outlet where the television plugs in on the wall at the foot of the bed. I don't know if your layout is the same but it should be pretty close.

2nd camera?
Is there a way to use a 2nd camera with the Garmin on the TV, and turn it off and use the trailer camera when tethered?
Love my Garmin but need a backup camera on TV also.....don't want another screen on the dash.
Thanks!

I believe the newer, smaller Garmin RV allows multiple cameras, but the 760 only one camera.

How accurate are the road directions on the 760LMT? Are the directions/routing specific to RV drivers? Reason for asking is that we were recently driving from Austin TX to Lake Buchanan using directions from the Good Sam Trip Planner and it sent us down a County Road that quickly turned into a one lane winding dirt road nightmare. Extremely difficult to find a place to turn around and then worried if we met someone coming the opposite direction.

Yes for RV, but No not perfect. I doubt that any map device is going to be perfect. I would never go down a road that is not a highway with my trailer in tow, Googlemaps or Garmin.

I've been intrigued by the "Using the Backup Camera" section in the RV 760LMT user manual where it refers to physically connecting a hard wired composite video camera in the mount. I have not found any other information on this, such as a schematic or wiring diagram for the connector or how it interacts with a BC-20 wireless camera. The mount that comes with the wireless BC-20 camera also has this connector.
