This non-authoritative link indicates that, from 1978, NEC required GFCIs in RV bathrooms and within 6 feet of sinks:

However, my 1988 Airstream Owner's manual deliberately points out that only the external outlet socket is protected. Has anyone any idea how this can be reconciled? Were states obliged to adopt the NEC codes? As a UK citizen I'm ignorant of such matters.

Is this the explanation? :

"A disclaimer: the National Electrical Code is from the National Fire Protection Association and is not a law. However, almost all community building codes incorporate it into their code. Many amend it in some way. So not every campground - or RV - in the country is wired to the NEC."
