Electric Spark

This week when took out my 96 Airstream out of storage (two weeks in storage), I had no 12 volt power (new batteries), have 3 solar pannels. Then when I made contact with trailer to tow hitch I there was a spark between the two vechiles. Any ideas of the problem. Post reply here or EMail me at

Your batteries were probably drained because of a light or something left on. You didn't mention it, but I surmize that you had the electrical umbilical plugged in to your tow vehicle. If that is true, then the spark occurred because the negative wire in your connector is not connected properly (most likely at the tow vehicle). The negative side of the circuit was completed by coupling the hitch.

The spark occurred because the tow vehicle was attempting to charge your depleted batteries. I doubt you hurt anything.

thanks for reply, yes, trailer was plugged to vechicle. However, batteries are probably bad. Dealer states that they have been having trouble with batteries lately, one guy went through three sets in month. They are going to replace. As for leaving a light, etc on, I have three 70 w solar pannels which should keep enough charge for one light on 24/7.
