Duo-Therm Heat Pump

I suppose this had to be the next thing to go...Just got back from NC camping and our HVAC does not generate any heat. I turned it on and got an odor similar to electrical burning. Turned unit off and waited until we returned home to check it out.

Duo_Therm, Mdl 630515.331, Prod.no 991760408, S/N 54634379 20 amp
13,500 BTU

I took the cover off and had the wife turn on the unit from inside the trailer. Unit comes on, then the compressor (long tube--?) next to the fan slightly vibrates/shutters, and unit almost shuts down. She catches her breath and starts back up to normal(?) spin, and slows down again...same routine. Fan does not bind and has free motion. Wiring looks good and 3 amp fuse ok. No lose connections or burnt wires. The only thing I found was a bunch of stink bugs lying dead inside the unit on the floor. Unit does not generate heat, and possibly AC (too cold to tell). Any other suggestions, other than a new one...darn, darn, darn..Any advice appreciated. Tom

Sounds like your start capacitor and PTCR are fried. There is a 4" X 5" access door under the shroud on the curb side of the unit. Remove the 2 - 5/16" hex screws and you will see the control board with the capacitors in front and below.

That burning electrical smell you experienced was either the PTCR (small block attached to the start capacitor) fried and/or the start capacitor blown as well. Replace both and you should be good to go.

If your A/C works, then these items are good but your reversing valve is stuck open. There are other remedies for that.

Let us know if my diagnostics are correct.

NOTE* Use only the identical units from Dometic, as any other value of start capacitor will eventually damage your compressor.

Thank you very much. On this trip, the HVAC gave up, new antenna just installed not working, and looking for, mending floor due to leak from something. Have caulked everything with a crack and waiting to see what happens. I will give your great advice a try tomorrow when I have the time. Today.....football. Thanks again.

So much for the FB game, this is more important. Did as you said and found box mounted to unit. Checking inside, I see the Start Cap and the PTCR? The PTCR WSX7 384-834, motor starter w/red wire. This connected to the start cap, CGE 250VAC 43/52 MFD, Lot 61074428, 27/09/2005, connections, one each black and white wires. This is in the black canister.

Hate to ask this, but gotta....Where do I order from and what information is needed. Is what I have copied from items enough information? Is
AS the only supplier? Just for kicks, any idea of price? Looks rather simple to change making sure all connections labeled/marked prior to removal.

Also....Gray canister, Start Cab with 2 red, one brown, and a cluster of 4 white wires. (do I change this also...3 items total.).

Just curious...there are several stink bugs laying dead around the canister. Is it possible the herd got across the contacts.

Thanks for being there and offering to help. Tom

Any RV dealer that sells Dometic should have the parts for your unit, or can order them. You only need your model and serial number of the unit. Ask for a hard start kit.

Had exact symptom on mine 18 months ago. Didn't have a way to go topside until we got home. Try switching to A/C mode. If you have the same symptom, the PTCR is the likely culprit. If you can get a visual on it, it is a small module connected to the start capacitor. It will probably look and smell burnt. As Lewster recommends, replace it along with the start capacitor that are the correct size for your unit. The new PTCR may look different from the old, but connects the same way. Be sure to label the wires before disconnecting and make a sketch of the connections, and as always, disconnect the shore power before removing the safety cover.

Had hoped to visit you when we were in Richmond in May, but ran out of time.

Many thanks to both of you...you're great. Now, first things first....My dog seemed to have broken or chipped a bone in his leg while we were at Lake Jordan. We have an appointment after while for more x-ray's, etc. Between Bambi's floor, HVAC, and dog, my head is sinning a bit (nothing unusual). Will get back to this ASAP.

TO ALL OF US THAT SERVED IN THE MILITARY ONE TIME OR OTHER....THANKS FOR "OUR" SERVICE, GUYS AND GALS....

Smile Duo-Therm Heat Pump

I owe some individuals a great big THANK YOU. Received the components today, installed, and HVAC working great. This website certainly is blessed to have great individuals like those who posted here, et al. I guess we all have the same thing in common, Airstreams. Frustrating at times but a great product. It's great having experts on every component willing to share their knowledge with all. Thanks guys and gals.

One thing I should mention...If I hadn't read the final instructions while filling out the on-line order form, I would have missed the warning that the units were not used on the same models, although to me they looked the same.
