Converter shot, next step
Hey, I could use some advice. My 86' Soverign 25' rear bedroom AS is up at Jackson Center for 27point inspection and they are suggesting to replace the converter with a 55 amp replacement.
Being very new to AS, I saw that some of you suggest replacing the whole univolt system. Should that be done when the converter gets replaced? What suggestions would you make for me. It has two batteries and no solar.
As you can tell I am not a highly skilled electrician.
Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I def. would replace old converter very much better than one you have, they are easy to replace but if you can not do have changed while at fact. If you want change yourself there a lot of us on forums that can walk you thru it, and save mucho money

If you do replace your converter make sure it is with a new tech 3 stage unit. Not the one that Airstream is still putting in new trailers.
Recommend you give these folks a call and discuss it with the pros.

Thanks. Learned that my AS.s converter is a uni-volt. The factory is recommending a #4455tcs unit.
Is this a 3 stage converter you recommended?

From the Best Converter Web site,
"Multistage 55 Amp Parallax ParaMode Converter/Charger with Temperature Compensation. The ParaMode with TempAssure is an unprecedented breakthrough in the RV converter market. The cabled sensor can be connected directly to the battery post for ideal charge voltages based on actual temperature. Also includes integrated temperature controlled cooling fan.
The ParaMode nominal output is 13.6 VDC. When first powered on, or when power is interrupted for at least one minute, the ParaMode will increase it's output voltage approximately .5 volts for 4 hours. If equipped with TempAssure the voltage during bulk will vary with with temperature and is capped at 14.4 VDC. After the bulk cycle, voltage output will drop back to the nominal output to finish charging (If required) and will continue to vary the voltage output based on temperature. Minimum voltage during extreme hot conditions is 12.8. 12.8 VDC has been chosen as a minimum voltage cap to help differentiate between battery voltage and DC accessories that might be powered at the same time."

IMHO A 45 amp converter is more than sufficient for your coach. You can get one one eBay for around $150.

I just ordered a progressive dynamics PD4655 after much reading and talking to Randy at bestconverters. He was very helpful. I went with a four atage that also desulfies (sp?) The battery to increase its life. Should be here Monday

Thanks for the suggestions. I just went to the Best Converter website and saw both the pd4655 and the 4455 paraMode with TempAssure. Any thoughts on the differences? I will call Best Converter and get their opinion too.

It always surprises me at how many people assume the parallax is fine. Hey AS uses the best parts right? And its normal to change your batteries every other year..
