need advice on changing out converter on 76 airstream......whats the best and can i leave old fuses in or does that have to be updated too?

I will recommend a Progressive Dynamics 9245 converter. Along with replacing the fuse panel with one of the new blade type.

I know where to get the converter but where could I buy the fuse panel?

The same place should have them.

Type in "12 Volt Fuse Panel" on the Internet. Look on eBay, etc.. Pick one with enough circuit capacity (the number of wires from your old fuse panel".. Rated for at least 50 amps of total load. A 9245 converter is rated for 45 amps.
Some automotive stereo shops and auto parts stores carry them as well.

You do not have to change fuse panel when installing new converter from old unlvolt, only thing that doesn't work is power on light. I don't no of any converter that has power on lite feature. Pur. nite lite plug into 110 outlet you will have power on indicator, also buss type fuses readily avbl. so why go to expense of changing fuse panel as you will very seldom blow a fuse. I changed my univolt to converter many yrs. I ago have blown 1 fuse in 39 yrs owning my AS[50 amp] buss fuse when testing output of converter [probe touched both outputs on converter] only 1 fuse blew no damage. It is simple change over, any questions pm me w/ph.# I can tell you how to change over, and easiest way to remove and replace converter. As for changing fuse panel my theory is if not broken leave it alone.

The new blade type fuses and fuse block are far superior to the old glass fuses and holder. If you are going to the trouble of changing the converter. Upgrade the fuse block. You won't regret it.

Can you explain in detail why blade fuses are better? A fuse is a fuse no matter if glass or blade. Auto manf. went to blade type as smaller and other reasons pertaining to assembly of autos. I stand behind what I stated prev. 1 fuse blown in 39 yrs. and my fault, so in my opinion waste of money and work to change over, but some people always want new things even if not better than old.

Unfortunately the old fuse panels do get just that, old. The spring clips often lose tension and then arcing starts. Same with the riveted connections between the clips and the bars they are attached to.

I don't think that one type is better than the other, but glass fuses are somewhat harder to find now.

I have replaced fuse panels mostly because they are old and often damaged over the years. Electrical parts which were not what I would call top quality to begin with are often just tired at 40 years.
