Backup Camera, it seems so simple, why don't they...?

I did my install about a year ago, so I have forgotten most of the details. I put a switch on my dash to power up the camera when not in reverse and a diode on my reverse light wire so that the reverse lights don't come on when I send power to the camera via the switch. The camera still comes on by itself when I put the truck in reverse or I can flip the switch and get a rear view any time. Total cost was about $4.00.

I heartily endorse the checklist idea. I use one already, for hook-ups and also for take-along gear. I used to rely on memory alone, but those days are gone. Too easy to forget something important.

My tailgate mounted back-up camera works fine for viewing the hitch ball and trailer tongue. Makes solo hook-ups easier than 2nd person assist. Curious now about what may be involved in making it energize thru a manual switch, not just reverse gear activated. Have any DIYers done it?

Interestingly enough, the Toyota Tundra can do just that. When getting a test ride at our local dealer, the demonstrator threw the truck in reverse going 50 miles per hour forward (freaked me out) but the reverse camera came on and showed the same view as backing up, which when hooked up will show you the coupler. The truck never tried to go in reverse.

I am reluctant to do this with my own vehicle, but it was impressive...

Same basic control that prevents the transmission from downshifting to low gear even if you move the shift lever when the vehicle is moving at a speed which is determined unacceptably high for the low gear.

It's connected to the back up light switch on my F350. I personally don't want the option of switching to the back up view while driving. If i were to hear a sound I did not like I'd pull over. I'll bet you can order an aftermarket camera to mount on the rear of your truck to turn on anytime you want - wireless.

In the middle 1960's a friends father bought a new Mercury, he found that at speed you could put in reverse, don't move the throttle, nothing happened,until he moved the throttle, and he ended up in the ditch,there was no warranty on the transmission....not cool......what is cool is poking the dash and seeing my hitch going down the road on my new ram ,you can even see the electrical cord plugged in....

Yes look at my post on the wireless backup camera. Works great on Android or iPhone, records as you drive and is reasonably priced. Haven't had any issues with the aluminum​ shell either.

I have one that was sold by forum member acestokes, but they seem to be out of business. However, all they did was package an off the shelf wifi camera and router. The camera talked to the router, which you put in the front of the trailer. Your phone talks to the router. It works well and any computer geek could put one together pretty easy.

The model number is in a picture on the post: RVS- 020813. Rear View Safety WiFi Camera. It uses the Go Vue app for smartphone.

If I get the Airstream factory installed back up camera, where does that image get sent to? Will it appear on the nav screen in my 2017 F150?

Just bought new F150. Haven't got trailer yet, so can't go out to test.

Nobody at Ford or AS dealer has any clue.

There is no way that it will appear on your truck unless you have an option for an external video in or a wifi connection which I highly doubt. If AS uses a wireless connection then you can use a wireless monitor such as a tablet/phone or a dedicated monitor. But be aware that with any wireless connection the video will not be as good as a wired one.

Airstream currently uses the Voyager camera+ monitor. Its wireless and you can mount the monitor in you tow vehicle.
