Auxiliary cooling fan on refer.

Should the auxiliary cooling fan be left on at all times when hooked to shore power? When it it necessary to use? Gas or electric?

If you mean the one that's venting the cooling fins on the back of the fridge, it should be thermostatically controlled by that little button switch on the fins. If the fins are warm then the fan should be running. Gas or electric, the operation of the fridge is the same and the fins needs to be cooled in order for the fridge to stay cool.

When I remove the outside access door to my fridge the works or whatever you call it are covered with a shield. This shield is too hot to touch. I have no cooling fan at all and the fridge won't go below fifty, the freezer works fine. So I guess I need a cooling fan hooked up? Dometic. What do you guys think? Jim

Is it an absorption fridge (Dometic?) or compressor style? If there is no fan in the compartment there are some kits you can get to add a 12vdc fan into the area.

Can you post a picture to give us an idea of what you're dealing with?

Dometic, I have seen the kits but don't see room in outside area to mount. Complete idiot when it comes to posting pictures. Thanks. Jim

If it has been working for years without a fan then installing one will not solve the problem. Fans are almost mandatory when the ambient temperature is over 95 degrees. Check:

I have a cooling fan mounted in back of the fridge blowing on the coils.
This fan is ON from the time I turn the fridge on until I turn the fridge off--even if many months.
If the ambient hot air is not removed from the fin area, the fridge is going to have a tough time getting the interior cold and keeping it there.

Am I missing something here. If the freezer is working good. Then the cooling system is working. Could it be something else. I think the Door is not sealing properly. or Something blocking something else?? Or is there two cooling systems on this model?

Figured it out. This is an aftermarket auxiliary fan that helps the refrigerator cool down faster and stay cool in very hot weather. It is controlled by a toggle switch in the coach. I am the second owner of this Flying Cloud (2011). The original owner added a lot of bells and whistles... one of the reasons we decided on this unit after a long search.

Just for information, the first cooling is done in the freezer section of your refrigerator, then, after it is cooled down (and cold) the evaporation of the ammonia refrigerant takes place in the lower refrigerator part. So, with weak cooling it is possible for the freezer to be cold, but the refrigerator section left starving for coolant and thus not cold.

Also, even in a normally operating refrigerator, if you put something quite warm like water to make ice cubes, in the freezer on a hot day, the capacity will all go to the freezer first, and the refrigerator will warm up.

I learned all of this at an excellent presentation on RV refrigerators given at the Vintage Airstream Rally in Gunninson CO last summer. Sorry I forgot the name of the presenter, but it was an excellent overview of how RV refrigerators work.
