AC recommendation for 2008 22SS

Looks like I need to replace the AC unit for my 2008 22 Safari Sport. Any one know what unit would be best. I live in the South so unit will get much use. Also any idea if there is anything that would be comparable with the current AirV ceiling unit I have. Much thanks for any help you can give

Nothing will be compatible with the Air V ceiling assembly. The current model uses a Penguin air conditioner, I think 13,500btu. If you dare to be different, Atwood now makes a roof air that supposedly you can run on a single 2000 watt generator, and is supposed to be low profile. I haven't seen one yet, if you get one, please let us know how it works.

Well Ahab, I almost hate to answer that question, but the sad truth is that "I really messed up " I plugged my AS into 220v service and knocked out several parts/services - 12v inverter, TV, micro wave, and AC. All fixed now except AC. Let this be a good warning to other AS owners, Check before you plug.

Talked with the Atwood folks. They do not presently make a low profile unit nor have plans to make one at this tims

Right now it looks like I'm going with the Domestic Penquin Ii. Anyone have a better idea?

Your only other low profile alternative would be the Coleman Mach 8. They are low profile, seem to work well, but be prepared for a lynch mob formed by your fellow campers over the noise it makes. Inside, it's just noisy, outside, I have heard quieter jet engines. While I wouldn't recommend it, it is an alternative.

There is now a new fan blade to fix the outside noise problem. New units may already be equipped with the revised fan blade. It not you can order one from the manufacturer.

How were you bale to plug in to 220V. You would need to use some type of adapter I would assume.

Amazing news adonh -- thanks for posting that about the Mach 8. I was an early buyer and it is indeed loud.

The Dometic unit is not a bad unit; however, for your AS, I would suggest an 11K unit which would take less power and is quite capable of cooling the interior as it does my 25'. They have some kind of new grommet to deal with noise to make it quieter, matching the older model noise levels with the different compressor and coolant. The 5 direction air distribution box is nice too. It is hard to say though. The Mach 8 is supposed to be a good unit too.

FYI - the replacement fan blade I ordered to quiet down the unit lasted no more than 3 or 4 months of heavy usage. The center disk of the fan started to crack near 2 of the blades and it DID crack big time on one of the blades, throwing the fan off balance and causing all kinds of noise. Thankfully I didn't throw away the original blade so that is back in while I check back with RVP. Maybe they have improved the design AGAIN (hopefully) and/or I just got a bad blade or something. I do think it is more of a design issue as the whole center of the blade is deformed and the cracking is on all three blades.

I'm off to the thread ADONH posted to see if anyone else is reporting the problem there.
