30-amp TT receptacle

I'm hoping to wire up a receptacle for our trailer this weekend. My shopping list includes:
  • 30-amp single-pole breaker
  • a bit of 10 ga electrical wire
  • an appropriate receptacle

Is there anything else I'll need? Where should I look for the receptacle? Surely Home Depot doesn't carry anything appropriate.

I found this on Amazon:

Amazon.com: Leviton 7313 30 Amp, 125 Volt, NEMA Tt-30R, 2P, 3W, Flush Mtg…

Will that do?

That is what you need. Any large electrical supply house should have it but at a price above Amazon so get a box and wire at HD and run the wire this weekend and install the receptacle when it comes in.

A standard dryer face plate should fit, but maybe wait till you have the receptical in your hand.

That is the correct one.

I was able to find one at my local Ace hardware in Michigan. Any electrical supply house should have one. Home Depot would likely have one. Your local hardware should be able to order one. Don't forget the box & cover plate.

Ahh, great. I'll get it by Friday with 2-day shipping. I thought the price sounded decent. Thanks for your help!

What does a bit mean? If more than 30' I would go to 8 ga. JMHO

Actually, I bought mine at Home Depot. I also got a cover for the box that keeps the rain off while plugged in.

They also carry replacement ends for RV cords. Not as good as a whole new cord, but good to know if you need a new plug in a hurry.

Not that I have any problem with Amazon. I do a lot of business with them.

hm depot has it all

just bought a 30 amp 120vac rv receptacle at hm depot. got everything. although you CAN squeeze it into a single gang box, I would suggest a double ganger, as the extra room is a blessing.

I've have luck finding NEMA TT 30R receptacles at Home Depot, never the plugs though.

The point about wire gauge should be considered. While 10 gauge may be enough the only way to know is to calculate voltage drop for the circuit you're planning. This is cheap insurance against a current draw short fall.

Best of luck,

Kevin

Josh,

if you're shopping Amazon, buy this little volume, too - Amazon.com: GB Electrical Wiring Simplified Electrical Reference Book #ERB-WS: Home Improvement

it will clearly help you size the wire you need based on the cable distance of your wiring run, not merely the lateral distance some folks mistakenly use. don't forget how much wire goes into the panel & box?

it will also show you that, according to wire & device sizing in the electrical code, that a single gang box is insufficient for the TT-30R device and the supply wiring. (wmarsha is likely very correct, for reasons they might not even know!)

besides that, it's a great little reference for most electrical questions you'll ever have....

the book will be among the best $10 you'll ever spend!

our local Home Depot carries the book and the outlet.

copper wire is expensive. do it right the first time!

best,

I stopped by Home Depot this evening. While they advertised the necessary part, they didn't have it in stock. I'll check a couple more places tomorrow, but am confident I'll find one locally.

This is just a temporary receptacle... for the next month or two while our 'stream is in storage. The Romex will be just enough to get out of the breaker box and along the wall a bit. The rest will be made up with our RV extension cord. It's all indoor, so I won't need an outdoor cover, and the single-gang box ought to do, since it's just a temporary install and wiring ought not to be a problem. Thanks for all the opinions, but I think I'll just do 25' of 10 ga Romex (at a whopping $30) and run it most of the way to the RV, and make up the difference with the extension cord. If this was a permanent fixture, and running more than 25 or so feet, I'd opt for the 8 ga wire for sure.
