30 amp to 50 amp

Newbie question here. I am trying to make reservations at a campground in Missouri. The only spaces with full services offer only 50 amp electric. I have a 27 fb International on order and we have 30 amp in the trailer. Is it safe to use the adapter that converts 50 amp to 30 amp?

Yup, no problem. Just remember that if you try and run everything at the same time, you will trip the 30A main breaker in the trailer instead of the pedestal.

Yes, it is safe to use a 50-to-30 dogbone adapter. In fact, I use mine regularly at State Parks that have side-by-side 50-amp and 30-amp connections, because the 30-amp sockets are usually worn so that the plug is a loose fit, which leads to tripped breakers. But the 50-amp socket on the park's pedestal usually doesn't see as much use, isn't as worn, and eliminates the problem.

If you're concerned about rain getting into the connection between your cord and the adapter, my solution is one of those wide postal rubber bands. Put it over the plug before hooking up (may have to double-wrap the rubber band to get it tight), then once the plug and the adapter are joined, maneuver the rubber band to cover the joint between them. Not quite as good as an O-ring seal, but it works well enough to keep water out of the dogbone's 30-amp socket.

Thanks you all! This has been a dream of mine for many years and I can't wait to get started Airstreaming! I am nervous about doing something wrong and messing the trailer up! Hubby has been a workaholic and getting ready to retire. He is handy but we don't want to make any goofy mistakes that could be quite costly. These forums are priceless!!!

In my experience, any site with "50 amp service" typically has 30 and 20 amp breakers and outlets in the same pedestal as the 50. You may find you can use your standard 30 amp power cord, or use a dogbone to adapt the 50 amp outlet to accommodate your 30 as Protagonist points out he does even when 30 amp service is available.

This is usually the case but don't rely on it. I bought my 50A-30A dogbone adapter shortly after arriving at an RV camping facility where they only had 50A and 15A outlets in the pedestals. Luckily Wal-Mart wasn't far.
