1975 Tradewind vent fan wiring

I have pulled the old fan down, but the wiring doesn't make sense. There are two red wires coming from under the skin (one going straight to the motor, the other into the switch controlled by the lift gear). Is the wire from under the skin straight to the motor the ground? Obviously the other wire has the controlled power lead.

I would put a meter on them and mark them positive and negative.
