12v lights in Streamline?

I just bought a 1964 Streamline and have a question I hope someone can answer. There are 2 bulb sockets above the sink that are covered by a single rectangular cover. The socket on the left works, the one on the right does not. I bought a new socket and attempted to replace the old one but was surprised at what I found when I opened it all up. Rather than 2 or 3 Romex wires, there was only 1 fabric covered wire coming from behind the wall. The original socket also had a short 2nd wire that looked like it had been screwed to the metal junction box (but it was no longer screwed in). It reminded me of the wiring method for a 12 volt light. Did Streamlines come with a 12 v and a 110v at each light fixture? As far as I know, a 110v light can’t be powered this way. But then again, I’ve been wrong a couple of times before. . Thanks for your help!

Welcome Aboard!! 👍

Our 63 Safari had a dual system, 12v & 120 in one fixture with a switch for each...your SL is most likely the same.

So Bob, for AS 12-volt lights is the aluminum chassis the negative/ground to complete the circuit? I remember as a kid that our wooden boat had 12-volt lights, but of course they needed a second wire to make the loop. The local hardware store actually carried 12-volt bulbs with the two brass contacts on the end.

Thanks,

Peter

My '70 Streamline had dual 12v DC lights in the fixtures. I am not sure when the different manufacturers quit using dual A/C, 12v fixtures.
