Hey pfish, post the vin for us and we will be able to tell you all sorts of stuff about it. Dont quote me, but I think they may have made a single axle tradewind in 67.

Vintage Airstream's photo archives would tend to suggest 1964 was the last year for single axle Tradewinds. Nothing guaranteed about that. Like Rodney says, toss the VIN back at this thread and we'll see if we can make sense of it.

Single axle 24 foot trailers named Tradewind, were last built in 1964.

From 1965 on up, the 24 foot trailers were all tandem axle equipped.

Post the serial number, as I have some of the old Airstream serial number logs. I will be happy to ID it for you.

Another hint...

If it has the framelss Corning (curved) glass windows, it would be a '66 - '68, framed flat glass and it's pre '66.

Post the VIN &/or pictures & we can confirm.

24 DSS 0780 is a 1962 model. The range of serial numbers for the 62 24 foot trailers was 0650 to 0847.

Also the last 4 numbers (6203) say that the trailer was made in the third week of 1962.

After looking at pictures I believe it is a '64 cuz it is landyacht, and it looks like that was offeered in "64 but not '63 or '65 or later. Also '64 looks like last year of the single axle for a 24 footer.

I agree with Sheri, it's a 62 California Double Bed TradeWind. The 0780 number puts it in the 0554 - 0847 range for that year.

I know the serial # says '62 yet I do not have a compartment in the rear under the window (which means no '62 or '63). Also I have 2 louvre windows next to the door. I'm thinkink '64. Did they produce 1 and only 1 model inj that year or did different models have different windows, openning etc?

Another clue...

Hmmm...the '64s & '62s have very different bathrooms. '62 has a wood cabinet w/sink and '64s have the molded fiberglass that's part of the bench seat-style toilet.

Do you have any interior shots or can you explain the bathroom at all?

There were two TradeWind models in '64. Both had the same back bathroom with exterior "service doors" in the back below the toilet/sink though.

Here's a copy of the '64 catalog...maybe this will help - check out the pages with all the floor plans, see if the window locations match yours.

'62 TradeWinds don't always have the back "service door".

Any exterior pictures? Alot of minuet details that show in them can help confirm the ID.

Paul,
The Vintage Photo Site shows 2 different 62's. One has the rear compartment and the other does not. Remember that in 62 Airstream had 2 factories and an Ohio trailer was not the same as a California trailer.

Early 1960s Differences Between Coaches

To add to what azflycaster posted, another element that can cause confusion is the number of coaches that had "custom" modifications to suit the customers order when new. While it was becoming less common in the 1960s, Airstream would still make "custom" changes to a coach to a customers' order. I know that my '64 Overlander was special ordered by its original owners, and it had several modifications to the standards illustrated in the brochure; and I am aware of another '64 Sovereign that had additional windows beyond the standard that were ordered by the original purchaser. It is possible, that the coach in question may have had some custom touches from the factory -- or they may have been added through later updates.

Good luck with your investigation!

Kevin
