My wife and I just aquired a 1964 Overlander (international, twin version) with my parents. I've always love the idea of airstreams. It definitely needs some love, fortunately my dad and I are quite handy and hopefully we can bring life back into the camper. I'm not new to home improvements, however very new to campers.

Just means some new tools and different way of thinking! Like rivet shaver for olympic rivets rivet gun and buy a couple of the 10 pack 1/8 inch drill bits for rivet removal. Bucking bit and the list goes on. Aluminum is not all equal and always keep you wondering what was happening on the assembly line the day your airstream was made! Everything works a lot better once you has bleed on it! Then there is vintagetrailersupply.com outofdoorsmart.com and inlandrv.com. You are in Michigan so call colin Hyde for ordering axles (not the expensive part) and take a lot of pictures for posting and remembering where that damn thing came from! Last but not least if you need help.....ask! Do you already have some pictures?? Can we see them? Use the advance button to attach a picture.

Oops accidentally double posted. This is my first trailer and quite the learning experience. It rained last night and water poured in through the a/c (I think its missing the cover). Anywho its definitely exciting.

Welcome! 1964 is a good year, imo, but I'm biased. You'll find lots of resources here, don't hesitate to ask questions, there are no dumb questions. Get it to the point where you can stand to use and then take it somewhere and camp. It makes the renovation process from there on out more fun.

doesn't look any worse than my 66 did two yrs ago. It has come a long way since then, and I was lucky with almost zero floor rot and frame rust.

I would love to replace the carpet with wood or cork. I discovered a water leak through the a/c unit probably because it's missing the shroud. Step one for me is sealing out the weather and we have a couple broken windows. O- and by the way I noticed some pipes that stick through the roof with no cover on them. Should I be worried?

That all depends did they seal around the pipes? I believe that they are the vent pipes and if so there are covers for those that you can get from VTS, inlandrv or out of doors mart. I would make sure that someone or you seal around the pipes in the mean time.

you will have to reseal everything. Then do it again when you find a new leak.

So are you going to replace or update any wiring or insulation? I ask because that would be an excellent time to seal all of the interior seams. Just my thoughts

update insulation and wiring... not sure yet. We were kind of given the choice to take the free airstream or it would disappear. So given the opportunity we said heck yeah. If I had lots of time on my hands I would totally start a full teardown and then full remodel, but I think with winter close my first priority is seal it up (fix the broken windows) and dry it out, (using a dehumidifier and plan on pulling out the old carpet)- Then go from there.
