Well, I've just bought something???

Hi, been lurking here for a while and finally bit the bullet and bought an Airstream today.
However, it does not have any identification that I can see as to the model.
The registration says that it is a 1973. The previous owner (who knows nothing about it), says it is 26 feet long.
Can anyone help?
Looking at various floor plans I had it pegged as a Trade Wind Twin, but the position of the stove and sink is reversed in relation to all the pics and diagrams I have seen.
As you can hopefully see from the pics, I will be needing a lot more help either trying to put the interior back together - or gutting it and doing a custom build.
Thanks,
Michael.

Welcome!

Not sure what it is. Looks like some Vintage Kin rather than Airstream. The 13 panel end caps would be prior to the '60s for Airstream, but its squarish shape doesn't look Airstream at all.

Looks neat, though. Keep us informed with your project.

It's funny, underneath your front window it certainly seems to have the shadows of the word A I R S T R E A M but I'm 100% sure it isn't one.

My first instinct would say Silver Streak, but the crown panels don't quite look like the ones I'm finding on photos of those, either. I know there were dozens of aluminum trailer manufacturers in the 40's and 50's... unlike today. So it's possible that it could be difficult to nail it down with absolute certainty.

Either way, it's a neat trailer and in fine shape, from what I see. A lot of character, from the bald eagle over the front window and woodwork on the cabinet doors and walls... to the creative use of an apostrophe in its name!

Have fun with it, and as vswingfield said, keep us posted.

It most definately is NOT an Airstream. Looks like a Silver Streak or an Avion, but you can still hang with us! We do not care what it is as long as it rolls down road carrying fun and friendship. Keep posting pictures as you work on it.

I don't think that it's an Airstream, either. The end panels are very Avion looking.

I went looking around the internet and my guess would be an Avion but probably in the 1960's because of those windows. Here is a link http://my.execpc.com/~drg/avionrem.html that has a few photos and a lot of info on the Avions.

Good luck with your new gem and let us know what you figure out.

This is a 1971 Avion with the same end caps. And here is another site with a bunch of photos.

Thanks Brad, and to all others who responded.
I've looked at the Avion site and certainly some of the end configurations look similar but from what I've seen of the interiors not so much.
Here is what you saw on the front. I've played about with the levels in Photoshop to make it more legible. It definitely says Airstream!
Could it be a disgruntled former Avion owner trying to make a statement
Michael.

It may not be an Avion, but the end panel configuration is unlike any Airstream that I have ever seen.

I think it's a Travelux, made in Ontario (Canada). Check out the links on this forum about these trailers. Look at post #18 for more pictures in this thread: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f161...s-14677-2.html

I don't, and the trailer is an hour away so I will have to check the next time I am there.
It looks as if the plate just above the faded lettering might have it.

Here is another thread: http://www.airforums.com/forums/f417...ada-20810.html Check out post #13, which has a pdf brochure. Your trailer might be the "Princess" model. No matter what, it's a cool trailer. The new Airstream Serenity has the same light wood, so you could use the decor style of the new trailer to renovate your classic.

Hi Lisa, I think that you are right. It's the only one that I've seem so far that matches, outside and in.
One of the things that had me confused was the stove sink combination that is reversed from every Airstream floor plan I had seen. The Travelux plan is exactly right.

So, although I haven't got an airstream I probably have something a bit rarer and therefore worth thousands and thousands of dollars))))
Not that I'm interested in that at all of course!
Michael.

YES - it's got to be a Travelux.
Something about it said it wasn't an Avion or a Silver Streak.

It's VERY rare.

Congrats

Hi again Michael,
Yes, it's very rare and very cool. It'll look so bright and airy when you clean it up. I really like the light wood. The new Serenity is trying to capture the vintage feel that your trailer already has! Here's some inspiration: Colonial Airstream NJ - 2010 Airstream International Serenity Series 27' FB

Best wishes and keep us updated on your adventures.

Lisa

It certainly looks like a Travelux that someone disguised as an Airstream. It is very much like the Travelux parked beside my house.

There should be a blue Transport Canada sticker to the right of the door just below the trim. Flying Canada geese at the front of the rub rails. And big "Travelux Made in Canada" stickers above the front and rear windows. But it seems all external ID has been removed.

Congratulations to Bolerama for the quick ID.

Michael,
I can with out a doubt say, it is a Travel Lux. I have the same trailer! And like any aluminum addict, I've begun the process of polishing...With solar powered uplights shining off the skin at night --it's incredible.

It's interesting. I was talking on the phone to an ex Travelux dealer in Ontario and he told me quite a lot about them.
His take on polishing was that it had to be done every year in order to keep the high shine.
Sounds like an expensive proposition in terms of cash and labour.
Can you tell me how much it costs and the time involved when you are finished?
Thanks,
Michael.

It is a MAJOR job to polish a trailer, weeks of hard work typically. But once it is done you can go over it once a year in a day or 2 and bring back the shine. Only if it left for 10 or 20 years, will it revert to its dull condition.

There should be some kind of wax that will preserve the shine for a year.
