We got one, Finally, newbie owner

Well after searching for an Airstream for about 4 to 5 months we finally found one. It's a 1983 Excella 31 dbl twin rear bath. All original, I would say excellent shape. Only thing that I really need to do to it is patch a soft spot just inside the door about 12"X12". From what it looked like at one time the kitchen sink was leaking and the water settled there. She needs a good cleaning and some minor work, but we couldn't be happier with our camper.

Thank you, not yet, very soon though. It was one heck of a trip. Took 2 days because my father in laws truck broke down so we had to get it fixed before we could tow her back home, first repair shop made it worse. His carrage bolt went out, the first shop didn't line up the key and hammer the new one in place, when they took it for a test drive they tore the new bearing apart and almost pulled the drive shaft off the transmission. So we had to get a hotel room and get it fixed the next day. After it was fixed she towed like a dream!

She needs a good washing inside and out. Was parked under a tree so it has some green on it and we found a few dead mice. Once I get her cleaned up, maybe over the weekend I will post some pics.

Welcome and congrats on the new Airstream. Some before and after pictures would be a good way to track your progress.

Welcome!

My antique Airstream has turned into a religion . . a total commitment in time, money, and energy. I even found dead mice in the roof air conditioner. They used the wall channel as a highway, the top curtain valance as a toilet, and the belly pan as mouse motel. I could walk in the trailer blindfolded, reach and touch something and it wouldn't be working and it will require time, money, and energy to fix.

I just bombed it last night, hoping to kill off any other critters.

So your saying it's a money pit?

I'd be tickled if this trailer was JUST a money pit. It's a time pit, an energy pit, my neighbors think I'm sick. My lawn looks like bums live here.

Oh but the joys of ownership!!! Talk about consuming, I have 4 a/s in various stages of repair refurbishment. and they're all mine. But, I love it.

I've learned more in the time since I bought this trailer than in any other single block of time in my life. This is also the most money I've ever spent for non-medical related items. So far I have invested the equivalent of three solid months of accommodations in a luxury hotel and I haven't slept one night in the trailer. It hasn't got a bed or a sofa or a floor under the sofa. Yesterday I got up, flushed five one hundred dollar bills down the toilet and went back to bed. I figure I came out $200 ahead for the day.

Get a cot and park it in the a/s, and sleep on it. You will feel better. Good luck, Susan

Splitrock,

Thanks for the inspiring post. I hope we can at least use this thing in the next few weeks.... Going to give her a through go through this weekend. I am almost scared to pull the vinyl flooring up. It looks like the rot goes at least 6 inches under the kitchen counter. Looks like I might be tearing out the counter tops soon. Before I do anything major though, we might just go use the damn thing before winter sets in.

I've almost decided to paint the vista windows charcoal black on the outside. It can't look any worse than they do now. They don't leak and I don't need the extra light.
